I have grown up with a passion and great motivation to be creative in this field, particularly with mediums such as painting, drawing, embroidery and ceramics. My experience extends from marking making in early childhood to my final VCE Studio Arts piece in 2018. In applying Ryan and Healy’s ‘Knowledge Processes and the Arts’ table (2008, pp. 86-87), my processes extend from experiencing the known to applying creatively. During my senior studies I became knowledgeable of the appropriate processes and metalanguage – such as elements and principles - applied to visual arts, which is relevant to Ryan and Healy’s ‘conceptualising by naming’ process. I ‘experience the new’ (Ryan & Healy, 2008) by visiting art galleries on an irregular basis and following social media profiles of contemporary artists for inspiration. In the past, I have strongly explored the process of ‘applying appropriately’ (Ryan & Healy, 2008) through my application of techniques and materials and in the documentation of the development process of my studio practices as a form of assessment and reflection. Following this childhood activity, I never truly pursued a musical instrument or my singing voice. My limited experience in the process of ‘applying appropriately’ (Ryan & Healy, 2008, pp. 86-87) involved producing recognisable notes using instruments such as the keyboard and glockenspiel during classes and transferring this knowledge into at-home activities. More relevantly, my current knowledge of music is that I do experience music as a creative process by attending concerts and listening to music on platforms such as Spotify, Youtube and Soundcloud. I do not have a passion for acting but as my self-confidence has increased over recent years, I do see myself being more open to the experience. Throughout my schooling years I regularly attended school productions and musicals in support of my peers but also as a form of entertainment. As the themes of these productions performed by students at Catholic College Wodonga were common theatre performances, such as Romeo and Juliet and Sweet Charity, I can confidently say I have ‘experienced the new’ (Ryan & Healy, 2008, p.. 86-87) in drama through watching rather than participating. More recently, I have also attended more professional live theatre performances such as Matilda at the Brisbane Performing Arts Centre in January 2017. I participated in classes at DMB Dance & Performing Arts Centre and Border Danceworks Wodonga, in the styles of Jazz, Hip Hop, and in the early years, dance classes which focused on developing gross motor skills. This is evidence that I was ‘experiencing the new’ by learning new techniques for manipulating the movement of the body, ‘applying creatively’ by combining different forms of dance and as a form of self-expression (Ryan & Healy, 2008, pp. 86-87), and by learning different genre of dance and through the appropriate soundtracks associated with those. I did these lessons – and participated in annual local dance productions – inconsistently from 2004-2014. More recently, in 2016 I spent approximately six weeks in dance practice for my Year 10 formal, focusing on more traditional slow dances, commonly comprised of four beats. Ryan & Healy (2008) also explore advertising media as part of the arts. This form of media and other creative avenues have the power to conceptualise themes of gender, body image, culture and race (p. 83). Media arts is also a productive way of incorporating the concepts of audio, gestural, linguistic, spatial and visual elements (listed in Ryan and Healy (2008), to create a multimedia art piece. My experience with media arts is primarily through photography and short films. I live my life through a creative lens and am constantly taking photographs on my mobile device or on a disposable film camera in order to capture particular moments. These moments are nothing specific but more focus on aesthetics of colour, space and proportion. As for film, I have created a handful of short videos upon returning from family holidays, weekends with friends and have also published videos from school tasks in previous years. My knowledge of media arts today, extends from experiencing as I learn new photography and film techniques – and editing, to analysing the elements and principles and use of colour, space, perspective, lighting and aesthetics created (Ryan and Healy, 2008).
