Prayer walking

Want to pray for your neighbourhood?

Don’t just sit there, head to the nearest exit and talk with God about the people and places you pass.

Here are five simple suggestions to get you started:

1. Choose your route

As you start your walk ask God to go with you. You can decide ahead of time where you’re going to walk, or you can simply ask the Holy Spirit to lead you as you go. Just make sure you don’t get lost!

2. Keep your eyes and ears open

Pay attention to the people you pass, as well as the landscape and atmosphere of the places you walk through. Pause and pray outside hospitals, schools, local government buildings and other places of influence. Ask God to draw your attention to things He wants you to pray for.

3. Pray the positive

Focus on God’s love for the people and the place. Pray blessing, even (especially!) in areas that are considered ‘dark’ or ‘difficult’. Use The Lord’s Prayer: “Your Kingdom come, your will be done…” (Matt. 6:10)

4. Look for God’s fingerprints

Ask God to show you where He is already at work in a place. Listen for Bible verses and promises to pray over the area.

5. Make notes

Record what you notice, what you pray for and any verses, pictures, or words you believe God spoke to you. When you pray for the area again, read these notes before you begin.

Prayer walking with others?

1. Try going inpairs

Jesus sent his disciples out in twos. It’s not intimidating or as conspicuous as a large group, and it is safer than people going on their own. A larger group breaking into pairs can also help to cover more ground.

2. Start together

Agree a place and time to start together. Explain why you’re gathering to pray and share a few pointers for those who haven’t prayer walked before. If you’re going to split into smaller groups, then agree a place and time to end together.

3. Learn about the area

Inform your prayers. Investigate the history of the place – how has the past shaped the present? Notice the landmarks you pass and learn more about the people who live there now.

4. End well

Meet up at the end and take time to share what you’ve seen, prayed about and heard from God. Keep a record and plan to pray again

Prayer with photos

Photographs capture little moments in time and are great for helping us to notice things around us which might help us to practice thankfulness, or to pray for God to change things around us. Try taking a photo each day and then using it as a prompt for prayer and reflection. Does it make you think of God's beauty and goodness? Does it make you want to pray for change? Prayer like this helps you to invite God into your day to day life so that you can be present with him.

Finding things in life difficult? Lamenting is a way for us to be honest with God about the things that are hard.

Unanswered prayer implies the enduring of some of type of loss which ultimately leads to the processing of grief and disappointment. Hopes and expectations have been unfulfilled, loved ones have been lost, dreams have been smashed. God hasn’t come through as you thought He might.
It is here we must remember that pain is not the enemy. Pain is pain. Pain needs to be expressed, for pain that is not expressed can never be transformed, and pain that is not transformed will be transmitted.

So why not take some time to read the Psalms of Lament:

Examples of personal Psalms of complaint include: 3, 6, 55 and 88 while communal psalms of lament 60, 74, 126, 137.

Could you write out your own poem or psalm expressing your feelings to God?
