Roxane and Burt initially sold the honey or leftover beeswax as candles. But Roxane noticed they could turn the beeswax into lip balm. She thought this could be a profitable product as there aren’t many natural lip balms out there. She found a recipe for this and tried it out. Roxanne always felt that women wore taken advantage of in the beauty care industry. She believed the woman on the packaging portrayed unrealistic standards to consumers. Because of this she decided to put Burt’s face on all Burt’s Bees packaging. She did this because it was easy for all women to compare themselves to Burt and think “I am prettier than Burt”. Burt’s depiction was very rugged with long hair and an extremely long beard. This branding was very successful and is now iconic for Burt’s Bees products.
