By: Kyle Baker
Genre: Graphic Novel
Read: 9/18/17

This book is about the story of infamous slave rebellion that was led by Nat Turner. This graphic interpretation vividly illustrates the atrocities of slavery and the events that led to the rebellion. It details on some of Turner’s childhood and the things he went through during his time as a slave. This book is great for young adults who want to learn more about the slave rebellion and the famous Nat Turner who wasn’t scared to stand up for what he believed in. This book will definitely interest those who are intrigued by history. I can see myself using this book as a resource in history class to depict the horrendous things that slaves went through and the events leading up to the rebellion.

By: Cece Bell
Genre: Graphic Novel
Award: Newbery Honor
Read: 9/20/17

This book is an amazing read and is a beautiful take on those who may be dealing with deafness. The author loosely depicts her childhood and the things she went through when she received her first hearing aid. At first, she was rejected because she looked “different” from the other kids. She was effected by this social mistreatment, but she didn’t let it stop her from being herself. She soon started to view her hearing aid as a superpower because she felt as if she had “super hearing.” This book is great for teenagers and children who may be dealing with deafness themselves. I could use this book to help develop self-esteem in students and show them that the things that make them seem “different” could turn into something that makes them strong!

By: Deborah Freedman
Genre: Early Picture Book
Status: Hot New Book (2017)
Read: 10/25/17

This book poetically depicts the building of the house. Not only does Freedman describe the different pieces that comes with building a house, she also describes how nature had something to do with it. This book makes you think about all the things that come together to make a house a home. This book is great for K - 5th grade readers. This book would appeal to those who love nature and those who are interested in the origins of things. I can see myself using this book to teach kids how to see the simple beauty in things we may take for granted on the daily.
