French and Indian War

Year: 1754-1763

This was a big war between the English and the French for land in America. To win this war, the English needed money so they added lots of taxes to goods in the colonies. This was the first act that started some tension between the colonies and the British. In addition to that, the colonies wanted money that would help them defend themselves against other enemies in the West. The British would not grant these wishes yet they expected the colonists to feed the soldiers, house them, and supply them with horses, wagons, and places to live.

Proclamation of 1763

After the colonies won the French and Indian War, the colonists celebrated. They were very excited to explore the western frontier that they had won from the French. The Proclamation of 1763 took that right away from the colonists banning them from colonizing the western frontier. Any land west of the heads of rivers that flowed into the Atlantic Ocean was off limits to the colonists. In addition to this it also declared four new colonies. These consisted of East Florida, West Florida, Quebec, and off-continent Grenada. Although these were major changes to the colonies, most of the proclamation was about the Indians and Indian Lands. The proclamation declared that all Indian people were under the protection of the king. It also said that all Indian lands owned by the English were to be abandoned. It established new laws, and prohibited many activities relating to the Native Americans.

The Sugar Act

Year: 1764

The Sugar Act decreased the tax on molasses from 6 pence to 3 pence per gallon after many smugglers brought molasses into the colonies at a much cheaper price. The Parliament also beefed up their navy to better enforce the collection of taxes. The act also increased taxes on many foreign imports such as certain wines, coffee, pimiento, and of course, sugar. The enforced tax on molasses caused the almost immediate decline in the rum industry. It was mainly made to increase the amount of money Britain made from the colonies

Year: 1765

The Stamp act was Britain's first serious move to establish governmental authority over the colonies. It taxed every single piece of paper that the British used. As Britain was in great national debt following the Seven Years War. The debt was about £129,586,789 in 1764. The colonists were taxed at a rate that had a high chance of causing a revolt. It wasn't the act that angered the colonists, it was the reason for the act which was to raise money for Britain. Taxes always used to be for regulating commerce but now they were being used to raise money for Britain which angered the colonists.

Year: 1765

The Quartering Act was passed by Parliament to outline the locations and conditions in which soldiers were to stay in the colonies. It required the colonies to house British troops in barracks which were to be provided from the colonies. If the barracks were too small for all the soldiers then many inns and families in the colonies were forced to house the British troops. In Boston, where colonists were very angry about being forced to house the troops and many of them got into brawls with the British troops eventually leading to the Boston Massacre
