Our first song we did was an example of 3/2 clave and a use of originally drum and bass related riffs.

The song was shape of you by ed sheeran. The way Ed uses techniques like the clave gives off a dance beat making it catchy and people will want to use it more and moreso leads to repetition of the song.

We then worked on a blues composition which had a chilled drum beat with meaningful lyrics that tell a story. This is classic to blues as it relates to the original way blues was used. Blues was used as an escape by slaves during the slave days. This was their escape and also a way to relieve stress but also tell their stories of how they had been victorious and kept strength in hard times. This was not completely fused but it allowed us to use the understanding of meaningful lyrics to create an emotional connection to the listener so they could potentially relate and appreciate the music more.

(Unfortunately this week was not recorded.)

We have then also recently done reggae. The reggae creates a relaxed feel and once again incorporated lyrics to create a message that was worth remembering. The sound of the song itself was not pure reggae it also has a fusion of different sounds involved almost like a jazz sound and that made the song sound fuller and more a fusion song than solely based on being a reggae song. The way the snare techniques are used allows a bouncy feel creating the reggae vibe along with the syncopation used to emphasise the and beats. This is when using 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 1 and 2 and 3 and 4. However this used more qith the guitar.

The way we created added variation and made the bass the instrument to carry the clave rhythm itself. This bought it up front and it carried the song. This is also a slight incorporation of the reggae style as typically the bass and drums maybe even both carry the main rhythm to the song. In doing so it created a similar sound to the song however giving and extra sound of fusion and also originality to us as musicians instead of having the piano triggering sounds as in ht original song.

The way the song was laid out meant that we had to think of the voices of everyone such as the rapper and the singers hence the split of the verses and chorus'. Due to the rapper this was the reason for having the Stormzy version of the song so that everyone could be incorporated.

The way the drums were intended to come across was to add the extra bit of separation to each section but also to make the piece more of an original and to push further away from the idea of being just a typical cover.

During this week we had the strengths of being able to make the aing our own by switching the instruments which were upfront. By doing this it showed that we knew how to give the sound a familiar yet different sound. We were also well off in the way we chose the way to perform the song due to the variation of voice as shown before.

However the weak point of the group was having three singers originally with very very different ranges and this was a struggle at the start. This however was sorted as one us ( Me ) decided to step in for the drums, and leaving the two vocalists to split between them and harmonies in the choruses which worked well. This was still a weakness as it took us a long time t figure it it out behind the scenes of the video.

As an individual my performance was good in the circumstances. This is the case as I myself am not a drum player. To am,ore trained ear it may sound as though the beat of the drum may seem odd as the snare and the bass drum were the opposite way round to how they should have been. However to me this sounded fine at the time as I myself am not a designated player of drums.

During this performance, the audience can be seen in the background dancing. This implies that they enjoyed it. By them dancing it also creates the feel we wanted as it is an up beat reggae song with a bounce in the way it is played. This is a typical part of reggae as it is for entertainment and dancing is a form of which.

Stengths if the piece is that we worked with instuments well and I feel as if we achieve the criteria of a reggae song due to the way the audience reacted. I also think we were able to incorporate a fusion with another genre, i would suggest jazz however i maybe mistaken but that is the feel that comes across to me personally.

Alternatively i think that there could have been more reggae influence if possible and maybe a chilled back and thin in texture area for an instrumental but this is a personal opinion.

As an individual I believe the performance of myself was presented well. I could be heard well on the vocals and was able to perform well. But i do think I could have been more confident with my presence.

With country we decided to keep it simplistic but also make it sound full and have a part of extra funk to it. To keep to the country criteria we decided to have the chords involving 7ths as it is a country aspect. Lyrically this is also the case I believe. I say this because when we coming up with them there were very joyful and at times a bit nonsense which-to us- gave off the feel of country aspects. The way the tempo of the piece changed was also a nice way to keep the country feel.

The Response And Strengths And Weaknesses

The way we established this piece was as soon as we heard country, this made us think of chord structure. The way we used this use the 7th chords because they create the relaxed and cheerful town. We decided to base it the theme of love as this was quite a happy feel. In country the way they base the song is based is on a subject is well known; not all are the same in the topics they are based on and this particular seems as though it is a relationship. This is reflected in the way the lyrics are presented and the rhyme scheme to show that the two go together well. The drum beat was also quite country because it was quite simplistic and carried the vocals and the guitars nicely.

Strengths for this piece were the way we were able to sort the pattern and how it was going to be structured. The contribution of everyone within the group in different aspects allowed the piece to come together as a whole for the performance. The way people took on roles they were not completely comfortable with was also a way we were strong as people were not stubborn and it meant we could work properly as a team and finish the piece. I believe another way we were clever with the way we did the instrumentation was due to the use of the ukulele because normally there would be a banjo to give the acoustics sounds rather than electric. However we merge the two and had the acoustic sound still but we just were able to amplify it and use this to make the song seem country but have a switch up in the layout.

As well as being a strength, the roles people took on was also a weakness for some, this was because the roles in which they took were not their preferred area. This meant that, the timing at point was a slight issue when we first. It was resolved with work but it held us back a little in development at certain points, I would say. Overall the way we performed was good and the end result pulled through but levels once again was an issue due to the switching of instruments during the rehearsal itself.

From my personal view I believe was in the country spirit. I also say i had better presences compared to previous weeks. Although the way to improve would be to make sure the vocals on the verses were louder and easier to hear.

For this piece we were allowed the freedom to choose a genre. The way of coming about this theme was pure accident as the guitarist was altering the amp and the sound that you can hear was the result. This immediately triggered the sense off an upbeat kind of motown jazz almost.

From there, the other members of the band figured out what the chords that went well together for the funk/motown theme and then we progressed. When playing around, the chords that were played fitted in all the instruments ans therefore stuck. The section breakdown worked well and from here we added some extra pieces to spice it up a bit more.

During the performance for this piece in the background people can be seen to be dancing moving with the beat. This is the kind of feel we were looking for. In the process of this piece many ideas were thrown to and fro about the approach and break down we were going to take. To fit the happy style of the lyrics the chords incorporated are major. By doing this it made it easier to work with structure wise. The different instruments were all included and all added to the genre.

To spice things up a little, we decided to add a rap which also lyrically fitted the verse well and we also chose to have a slightly different layout of the backing. This once again split the sections up. The way the rap came around was I was having a sing with the lyrics and at one area it felt slightly empty. The opinion was put forward. This lead to the rap. This then lead to the overall layout of the song.

My personal performance was, I think well put across. The flute texture added well to the overall sound. The way the microphone allowed the flute to be heard more. And also the variation of the way the flute I think worked well. Vocally rapping is not my forte and due to that my presence was not brilliant. This an area for my improvement.

Response And Strengths, Weaknesses

The response in the performance of this was generally harder to decide how we would change it up. The way we decided was to strip it back at the start and then build it up. In the original however at the start there is an upbeat tempo with drums kicking off the song with a sudden hit of music. The way we also allowed it to be a a different sounding song by using the ukulele to start the song which gave the stripped back feel.

The build up meant that the use of both an electric and acoustic as well as a piano was used. This also gave a different feel as it was the normal instrumentation you expect to hear from this song originally.

The piano played the melody of the song sound more relaxed and not so in your face. This meant the genre had changed from being more of a pop song to more of a calming relaxed song, it sounded very different compared to the original because this can not be heard. The acoustic also meant that the sound of the song had a more relaxed feel to it. The electric instead of strumming, more often in the song, picks the the strings adding an extra layer to the song. This was carried through the song at times and allowed the musical sound of the overall song was different to the ear.

As a group we worked well together and I think that for all the instruments we had, the sound blended well and worked together well. They all sank up well and the timing worked well. Vocally the performance was strong and sounded aesthetically pleasing to the ear. The way there were upfront vocals and then also vocals singing softly at points, made the variation more unique and a different feel to yhe original and also different genre. Another way the song can be considered different genre is the tempo. Different genres tend to have different tempos or ranges of tempo. The original is 120bpm however ours is 70 bpm.

As an individual my performance was in the drums. My performance was bot brilliant but it did help keep the timing together with the kick drum. However during the rap I played slightly differently. I doubled up on the kick drum and added a snare hit to add variation. Personally I believe I could improvr but braudening my knowledge of drums. I do slightly feel as though I boughtthr group down overall. This leads me on to weaknesses.

Weakness wise, once again I would say that the drums brought down the performance. I also think that the build up could have been better as there were certain instruments playing a little too long and therefore it could have been varied even more for affect.

This week we were asigned the task to take part in a genre we had not yet done. This for us was the punk genre. However this did not stay the case as it went into more of a rock/metal punk instead. The idea for the lyrics was that we are not designed to be perfect but instead to be ourselves. We shouldn'tboe down to the requirements of others but should be true to our selves.

The response to the song originally was to have it with simplistic chords and then add the punk drums to the sound to complete it. This was not the result in the end and it ended up being switched around so that we had the same chords played but with more variation of playing that had not been intended. Due to the way the electric plays, the song itself came across differently to the way we originally wanted to. The vibe went from punk to punk rock almost. The overall performance was good because it was different feel to what we had all done up to yet.

We had a few weaknesses. This could be improved with more communication between the groups as there was a struggle between who was doing what. Another thing to improve would be the way we were arranged. During the start of the performance, there were people who did not have a part to play. This was due to people not listening and being unsure of what to do. This was resolved yes, but it took too long to get to this point.

However the strengths of the piece were that some people were put on instruments that are not their primary instrument. This meant they were put to the test and still managed to pull off a good performance. When this was the case the people in the group who were able to play these particular instruments, helped those in need to bring the piece together.

I personally believe that I performed well. I think this because , I am not by any means a bass player. I played the notes correctly ( as far as I am aware ) and it fitted well with the rest and fitted the genre we finally went with.

The way we approached this as having to have two main vocals was the idea we would either split it to a verse and chorus each or split between both chorus' and both verses. This was decided to have Jess doing verses and Me to do the Chorus.

We wanted to do a pop indie song this week. Indie music tends to be about anything lyrically. This is the approach that was taken.

Instrumentation wise the song was varied on the way the layers of the sing built up. It was heavily string based and this made it hard to incorporate them all evenly but everyone's abilities were bought together and the parts were shared up on them. George and Georgina took the decision to share the roles. George added a melody with the guitar and the use of picking the string and using more broken chords. On the other hand Georgina played the root chords to what George was playing and to follow Ryder played the root notes on the bass. All in all the variation of the way the same thing was being played gave the illusion of a fuller more complex sound. This was the strengths we had. As well as the way the we were organised with breaking down the structure by Ryders ideas and capability of listening to others to take in all the ideas to make the song work. The drums were also a big part by keeping the timing and showing the change up in section to keep the sound intresting to the ear.

Alternatively we did have some weaknesses that was resolved with the timing. However one other reason that there was the issue of the PA. The issue we had was that there were so many stringed instruments meant the drums also had to be the same level of hearing. This meant that at points the vocals were unable to be heard due to feedback if turned up. We did lower volumes on all instruments to try and alter this but it did not work. In the end the vocals were still hearable over the volume and bought the piece together and added the last piece that was missing.

The performance and strengths and weakness

The performance was loosly based off a song. There was originally less in the group and this meant we stuggled to sort the structure. In thr original we still had the bass riff which was still used in the continued gide as seen. The way this was used further was to take the idea to them cut iut a backing track being preciously used. This meant tht it was only the bass riff and also a simplistic keyboard tune using the f#minor scale. For this portion, before others joining, this worked well with the vocals in their own.

However we then gained a drummer and an extra person who helped in keyboard. These people allowed the sound he carried further and meant the sound could be develpoed more and made to sound more of a song. Having more instruments also meant that kyles voice stood out more due to the difference in he sounds we previously had. During this time there was also an extra keyboard part played which added variation to the song this was because it was used in a higer octave and the higher pitch contrasts to the rest of the instruments and vocals which are played lower.

Overall the strengths were that we helped bring kyles vocals upfront so he could be heard. We also had assistance from the new comers who picked up parts quicker and therefore meant we had more time to correct the piece as a whole. We also worked well to make the sound more full so we didn’t have to use the bwckung track in the end.

Alternatively we had the weakness originally of not having the right number of instruments to match the level needed to make the sound more appealing to the ear. However this was resolved. We did also face thr problem of perhaps not being able to hear instruments as I think that keyboard could have been slightly louder perhaps.

I believe that I played well using the drone notes and then quicker notes as I did. However my part would not have sounded as good as it did without the contrasting higher octave piece.
