It was a trial to find who is a witch in the town of Salem. Many people accused people who looked weird or people who are isolated from society as a witch. By the end of 1692, over 200 people were jailed and standing accused of witchcraft. But almost 70% of the people who are accused were innocent.

A crucible is a container where metals or other substances get melted or subjected to very high temperatures. Arthur Miller, the writer of The Crucible, used the word crucible in the title of his writing because he thought that the 1600's witch hunts is similar to a crucible where the increasing tensions is causing a melting to purify the society.
