The Summer Undergraduate Research Training (SMART) Program provides frontier-level, biomedical summer research projects for undergraduates in a supportive environment with supplemental educational activities.

The official dates for the SMART Program 2026 are June 1 through July 31. The move-in date will be May 31 and move-out date will be Aug. 1.

The program offers:

Nine paid weeks of biomedically related research in a broad range of areas
Research and professional development seminars designed for undergraduates
Career development activities
Designated housing near Baylor College of Medicine

The application for the 2026 program will open in October 2025.

MSTP Access - Undergraduate Summer Research Program

The MSTP ACCESS Program aims to combat the decline in the physician-scientist workforce by expanding the pool of applicants applying to MD/PhD programs. MSTP ACCESS primarily recruits undergraduates from institutions classified as Carnegie R2 and below. The primary goal of ACCESS is to provide scholars:

Exposure to physician-scientist career paths
Insight into the MSTP (MD/PhD) application process
Access to ongoing mentorship is available to students with limited research opportunities at their home institution (significant research experience is not required).

Van Indel Institute Graduate School

Van Andel Institute (VAI) offers a Student Research Fellowship Program designed to provide undergraduate students the opportunity to work closely with a research mentor on a project exploring the cellular, molecular and genetic basis of human disease. The goal of this program is to introduce undergraduate students to the concepts and practice of design, implementation, interpretation and presentation of basic biomedical research.

Application for the 2026 Student Research Fellowship begins Dec. 1, 2025. The deadline to apply is Feb. 2, 2026.

Expanding Diversity in Economics

Expanding Discovery in Economics+ (EDE+) brings together early undergraduate students from colleges across the country to hone their research abilities and technical skills. The EDE+ Summer Institute develops student-driven, long-term research projects in economics and related fields over a full 9-week program.

The Summer Education Research Program (SERP) is sponsored by the School of Education and the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Graduate School. The program focuses on increasing access and exposure to research experiences with faculty mentors for students interested in pursuing graduate studies in academic fields within the School of Education. The program offers a competitive $5,000 stipend for participants as well as other amenities, including travel expenses to Madison and housing.
