Democracy affects our life today in several ways. The Greeks created the democratic system of government so that citizens would have a voice in how their country was run. The democracy that was derived from ancient Greek culture is still present in our modern world today. Every office in our country is voted upon. The outcome of the votes decides who will represent us in our government. By voting for a specific canidate we are chosing someone whose own values closely represent ours. This affects each of us personally as we hopefully elect canidates who want what we want such as better schools, more recreational areas ,and lower taxes.

Sports

Ancient Greek culture brought the world of sports and sporting events alive. This is evidenced today by the Olympic Games held around the world and the competitive sporting world that encompasses some much of our lives today, such as soccer, running, wrestling, and gymnastics. This element of ancient Greek culture was important in that it drew people together socially in an enjoyable setting, as it still does today. Sports are of primary importance in our lives as we try to be as health conscientious as we can. Personally I compete in no less than six sports and I play a minimum of one sport every day.

Ancient Greek architecture is evident in our homes, churches, musuems, and many buildings today. The most common form of ancient Greek architecture that is used is the column. Columns can be found outside, as well as, inside homes and buildings. In ancient Greek culture columns were a sign of importance. Many prominent buildings and homes use columns in their architecture. Although they don't affect me personsally, I like being able to identify the different types of columns I notice.
