I also was shocked that Dante also got really hurt. Since Ari pushed him out of the way, I was surprised that Dante had a cast and both of his eyes were black. He  doesn't recognize this as an act of heroism. Ari wakes up in the hospital and can't really remember anything but only feels pain. His parents and Dante were with him the whole time to see if he was okay. It was heroic because that was his reflex, less heroic people wouldn't have such a helpful reflex.  I think that what Ari did was out of love. Ari hasn't yet gotten his casts off and he feels so stuck and bored and lonely. Also now that Dante is leaving for a year he won't have anyone to really talk to. Deep down, even though he promised Dante they would be friends when he got back, Ari knows that everything will have changed for both of them. He doesn't know if "Ari and Dante" will become "Ari...and Dante."
