The Ute Indian tribe was a mobile society. They were hunter and gathers. The environment forced them to be a mobile society because the Great Basin is comprised of 4 deserts. These deserts make it nearly impossible to farm due to the lack of water. As a result, the Ute Tribe hunted it's food and since the animals moved around the Ute Indians also moved around following the animals .

The geography of the Great Basin is that on the eastern and and western edges of the area there are two mountain ranges, the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. In these mountains the climate is cooler and wetter than the middle of the Great Basin area where the climate is desert-like, very dry. In this middle region agriculture is very hard, but there is an abundance of wildlife.

The environment of the Great Basin made it so the Ute Indians could not grow their food and as a result could not trade crops for things they needed. So, they used what they could find in the Great Basin, animals. They mostly traded fur pelts for European goods and other things they could not make they traded for with other Native American tribes.

The gender roles within the Ute culture was the men usually hunted and fished while the women gathered plants, made baskets, built houses, and cooked/prepared the food. Both participated in religious rituals. The environment caused this kind of culture to be this way because the men had to go hunting for their food and as a result were not home very often during the day, so the women had to work to build the houses and make hunting gear among other things because the men were very often away hunting.

The location of the Great Basin is in prime area for hunting. This explains the gender roles within the Ute tribe because due to the area of the Basin, men had to leave to hunt.
