Themes - Fantasy, Daydreaming, Neurodiversity, Reality, Natural Forms, Worlds

Description - I will explore what it means to be part of the neurodiverse community, how this can affect (not negatively) our daily lives, and how we perceive the day-to-day, e.g., daydreaming, as one aspect. I will be exploring this through the fantasy genre.

Outcomes - Either a short film paired with prints OR a piece of set design paired with a soundscape.

I will use a mix of physical and digital making, such as screen printing, digital design in Illustrator, drawing, and painting.

As I don't know which route I will take yet, I am not 100% sure who I will need to collaborate with. However, in either scenario, I will need people from the neurodiverse community to interview for primary research and to hear about as many different experiences as possible.

Themes = memory, family, love, compassion

I want to make a short animated film that briefly follows a gentleman with dementia in his care home.

In his room, while unaware of the life he once lived, an elderly gentleman paints. With each vibrant canvas he unlocks stories and connects memories until, finally, the face of his daughter becomes recognisable - only to realise she has been the one asking about the weekly artworks each Sunday.

I want to juxtapose experience with anemoia (nostalgia for a time or place one has never known) by representing memory as influx and fragile. These memories will be experienced and felt by the audience alongside the gentleman as we journey into each painting to explore the vivid dreams, which toy the line between reality and imagination.

I'm in the process of co-writing the screenplay at the minute.

I'm also looking for voice actors and sound designers if anybody knows anyone :)

I'm not sure what to do for my second outcome yet so that's still in the works

An Idea...

Frustrated with the association between knitters and ‘old ladies’, I want to

design a knitting brand for young creators who don’t feel they fit into that

category.

It is not that I don’t think we should be more like ‘grannies’ with many of their stereotypical hobbies being beneficial in so many ways, especially for the mind. But society's perception of women and crafts is inherently sexist.

It wasn’t until the industrial revolution in the 20th century that knitting became a ‘women’s’ hobby. Before then knitting was a survival technique to make clothes to stay warm, done by both women and men (particularly

male sailors at sea). But the industrial revolution retired the need for handknitting and led to the association between the craft as a housewives hobby.

I aim to reshape the narrative around knitting and crochet, celebrating its history and femininity whilst catering to a new generation of creative minds who don’t fit the outdated stereotype. This brand will celebrate the sustainable nature of making your own clothes, encouraging individuality

by directing focus away from short-lived micro trends, and promoting environmental consciousness in every stitch.

Outcomes

1) Brand Platform

This would be in the format of a website/instagram page (considering which this is really the best way to reach target audience). Wouldn’t be selling anything yet. It would create a space for young people interested in knitting/crochet (approx 20-26 year olds). Possibly tutorials, tips, etc.

Imagery: shown in the Visual References above, I want to photograph girls in their 20s knitting in places that you wouldn’t usually see it. Currently thinking about the pub as an interesting way to reshape this narrative of girls and knitting.

2) Knitting/crochet class/workshop

Encouraged by my friends often asking me to teach them, I want to host a relaxed class with a group of girls to be promoted on the brand’s platform.

I may ask a friend to record it in a ‘vlog’ style hopefully reaching my target audience.

I would like to experiment with editing juxtaposing imagery (video, pictures) and sound to change the dynamics of the initially represented emotions.

The Kuleshov effect. In this experiment, he spliced a shot featuring an emotionless protagonist alongside three disparate scenes: a young girl in a coffin, a bowl of soup, and a woman. The audiences perceived the protagonist emotions differently each time — sensing hunger, sorrow, and desire. (Azizah et al., 2020) These reactions show how imagery and editing can change the viewer's perception of the subject matter and leave space for imagination.

In general, I am interested in work that revolves around being present, everyday life and interaction. I enjoy noticing the unnoticed and appreciate the subtleties in life. I enjoy collating archive imagery representative of this and have an appreciation for film.
