Panama is a country located in south America that is home to a variety of different plants and animals (Britannica). Panama's population is around an estimated 4,490,907 (world o meter). Panama's official language is Spanish (Britannica). Panama is known as the "Hub of the Americas", because it has two ports located on both oceans (ITA). Another reason Panama has earned the nickname the "Hub of the Americas" is because the panama canal is Panama's largest economic contributor raking in money from tourism, banking and logistics (ITA). The current president of Panama is Laurentino Cortizo of the PRD party (ITA).

Panama has many of the same holidays that North America also has, such as Independence Day (Nov 3rd), Flag day (Nov 4th), Mother's Day (Dec 8th), Christmas (Dec 25th) and more (Official holidays in Panama). Some holidays such as Christmas has traditions that's roots can be traced back to "a blend European and Latin American history, specifically Roman Catholic traditions and songs" (International Relocation Firm). Another holiday Panama celebrates are Independence day that celebrates Panama's independence from the Spanish Empire (National Today). Similarly to Independence day Panama celebrates flag day that celebrates Panama's separation from the Republic of Columbia (National Today). Panama celebrates their Independence day and Flag day with parties, parades, music, fireworks, dancing and more (Remitly). Another holiday Panama celebrates is Mother's day by attending church as a family or just spending time appreciating and showing love to mothers (National Today). The origins of Panama's mothers day started with "the wife of Panama’s then-President Florencio Harmodio Arosemena proposing the idea" (National Today).

In Panama people celebrate Christmas with decorations, Christmas markets, and seasonal food (International Relocation Firm). Some examples of these foods are Tamales, Asados (roasts), and Arroz con pollo (rice with chicken) (Chef's pencil). Most of these local traditions have come from a mix of both European and Latin American history, but more specifically Roman Catholic traditions and songs (International Relocation Firm). One of Panama's most important traditions is spending time with family. Throughout the month of December family's all around Panama will come together to spend time with one another. During this time kids will decorate trees and family's will prepare for the annual Christmas dinner and share stories with one another (International Relocation Firm).

Holidays in Panama vs How I celebrate

During the holidays my family and I celebrate by exchanging presents with one another, spending time together as a family by going on a walk playing card games, and playing video games. As a family we will also cook dinner, and bake cookies together. Another way my family and I celebrate during the holidays is by decorating the outside of our house with Christmas lights. We will also decorate the inside of our house with stockings, a christmas tree, and more lights. In Panama families spend the holidays by sharing stories with one another, decorating homes, cooking/ baking and exchanging gifts. Both my country and I celebrate the holidays in similar ways and have similar myths and Christmas stories we tell one another such as the story about Santa Clause.
