She went to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and Austin. She lectured at the University of Santa Cruz where she shared her experience of being Chicana and queer. Her books are semi-autobiographical with them expanding on her experience or observations in being so close to the border while using fictional characters to tell that story.

Despite this being part of the larger piece "The Gloria Anzaldua Reader" I believe that this poem alone speaks volumes in terms of what and how Anzaldua wrote. The book offers a collection of Anzaldua's work and bibliographic writings. The topics covered include: identity, multiculturalism, and disability.

Anzaldua focuses on culture, heritage, the identity crisis of being on the border, women in Hispanic culture, and lesbians in a straight world. She expresses anger towards oppressors and understanding between identity.
