         <description><![CDATA[<div>~Around 270 BC Chandragupta's grandson Asoka became king. <br><br>~He was a great ruler, and extended Mauryan rule over most of India.<br><br>~A few years into his rule he converted to Buddhism and ended his wars of conquest.<br><br>~After becoming a Buddhist, Asoka had more time and resources to improve the lives of his people.</div><div><br>~ He dug wells and built roads throughout the empire.<br><br>~ Along the roads workers planted shade trees and built rest huts.<br><br>~ He also encouraged the spread of Buddhism<br><br>~ Asoka died in 233 BC, and the empire soon fell apart.<br><br>~ In 184 BC, the last Mauryan king was killed by one of his generals.</div>]]></description>
