~He was a great ruler, and extended Mauryan rule over most of India.

~A few years into his rule he converted to Buddhism and ended his wars of conquest.

~After becoming a Buddhist, Asoka had more time and resources to improve the lives of his people.

~ He dug wells and built roads throughout the empire.

~ Along the roads workers planted shade trees and built rest huts.

~ He also encouraged the spread of Buddhism

~ Asoka died in 233 BC, and the empire soon fell apart.

~ In 184 BC, the last Mauryan king was killed by one of his generals.
