Vietnam War Escalating

The Vietnam War escalated due to a combination of factors, including the Gulf of Tonkin incident, the Cold War ideology, and the domino theory. The Gulf of Tonkin incident, while debated, provided President Lyndon B. Johnson with a justification for escalating US military involvement in Vietnam. The Cold War ideological clash between communism and capitalism further fueled the conflict, as the US aimed to contain communism spread in Southeast Asia. The domino theory, which suggested that the fall of one country to communism would lead to others following suit, also influenced US decision-making. Involved a significant increase in US military involvement, including bombing campaigns, deploying ground troops, and using defoliants like Agent Orange.

This portrayed in the movie when surrounding countries were falling to communism, and the Cold War was having its take-off.

Richard Nixon resigned as President of the United States on August 9, 1974, due to the Watergate scandal. Facing a highly likely impeachment and removal from office, he announced his resignation the previous day. The Watergate scandal involved a break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters, along with a cover-up by Nixon's administration. The scandal led to a series of investigations, including the discovery of incriminating "smoking gun" tapes, and ultimately, Nixon's resignation.

This portrayed in the movie when Forest Gump has his interview with the president. The president at the time was Nixon.

It aimed to give African Americans the same citizenship rights that whites took for granted. It was a war waged on many fronts. In the 1960s it achieved impressive judicial and legislative victories against discrimination in public accommodations and voting.

The film includes footage of George Wallace blocking the doors of the University of Alabama, but it's framed through Forrest's lens, suggesting a more neutral, perhaps even amused, observation rather than a confrontation with systemic racism. In the film, Forrest introduced Bubba and Bubba’s mama, which ultimately introduced a much more significant issue, the civil rights movement. When Forrest was introducing Bubba to the audience, he explained that Bubba’s mother worked as a cook for wealthy people. He has family history of slaves with black women serving shrimp to the rich white men.
