I was inspired to learn and understand more about how the Kaurna people used this area. The Kaurna people pre-colonisation had an abundance of fresh water from what we know now as The River Torrens.  Native animals looking for water, in turn became a convenient food source. The area had native grasses with provided materials for the Kaurna people to weave practical items from. The positioning of the area being half way from both the sea and the base of the Adelaide hills provided a significant meeting place for the Kaurna people transitioning between seasons. 
 
For the early colonists, the area provided fresh water all year long, high ground to look out over the west towards the sea. William Light understood this area’s topography though watching and understanding the use of the land by the Kaurna people.
 
The main remaining vestige from pre-colonization is The River Torrens.

The contemporary art was beautifully designed to tell a story and reflect the history of the land. It displays how the Indigenous Australian’s once lived. I especially enjoyed reading about the weaving being social and community orientated as i find the idea of craft bringing people together and connecting people to be really lovely. Something i felt during this walk around Adelaide was that there should be more instalments in less secluded and hidden places. I walk past the Yerrakartarta mural on my way to and from uni every week and was never aware it was there. A few things seemed to be quite tucked away and hidden.

In the city is is much more noticeable than in the country also, due to the density of large buildings and infrastructure, but that's not to say there has not been a big impact across all of Australia. 
The image on the week 2 tab really influenced this thinking, as it made reference to a location i pass through frequently. This also made me wonder how the landscape would have developed if it had not been impacted the way it was by the Europeans.

It is hard to imagine how this land looked once before. I had never considered that the river and gumtrees were once used and managed by Indigenous people to ensure a reliable supply of food plants. 

I feel quite removed from the past uses of this land and the Kaurna people, and it is nice to take a moment to reflect on what was once here. The inclines and declines are still there, but even the natural areas along the river are quite tame. 

I enjoyed seeing some indigenous works I had previous times not taken the time to examine, or others I never knew existed.

Even with the gum trees and sounds of a Kookaburra in the background, the loud noise of traffic and the imploding construction site 100metres across made it difficult to imagine. The manicured grass, the lights propped under the gum trees for tourists to see the possums, has even turned the most simple things into a 'show'.
