Module 1: The importance of language awareness

During this module, participants will:

Understand and discuss the importance of language awareness

Become familiar with European Union initiatives that support language learning and language awareness.

Explore the first part of the Learning Scenario (in order to develop your own, at the end of the MOOC)

1.2 What is language awareness?

it is crucial that every teacher be conscious about the different languages their students speak in the classroom, and also understand the possible challenges but also opportunities that a variety of languages in their classroom present to them.
* E.Hawkins, the father of Language Awareness

L.A. it is explicit knowledge about language, and conscious perception and sensitivity in language learning, language teaching and language use.

BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills), which refers to the language commonly used in social interaction, and CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency), referring to more formal language, essentially the language of schooling, which is crucial for students to successfully demonstrate what they have learned and achieved.

1.3 Why language awareness is important for Teachers?
- make sure that languages in your classroom do not pose a barrier or a challenge for your students’ learning.
- when teaching in a different language than the one students are familiar with, this language is key, as it becomes the vehicle to delivering the message to our students.

1.4 How to get started with language awareness
* The first step to becoming a language-aware teacher is to be conscious of the different languages that your students speak in the classroom.
* Opening up the classroom practice to allow students to use their home language helps to develop a deeper understanding of language awareness.
* If you allow these children to use their home language you transform their ability to access content material and you transform their ability to develop an identity of competence, and this means they are not condemned to use six months’ or a year of non-participation, because you allow them to contribute in a much fuller and much more cognitively demanding way.

1.5 LA as a component of effective communication competence
