         <title>Teaching Gen Z - Peter</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>This is actually a really tough question. As a Gen Z myself this is something I am struggling with. The way I try to approach it is by showing we care about our students and show them that you care about their safety and well-being. In an online environment I am not sure how one would go about doing this. Do you include links to self help sites? Do we create an environment that is calming by design and not stressful? One idea that I may have is to include mindfulness breaks. There are many online videos that are tackle these subjects and are long enough to provide a meaningful break to students but also not too long to overwhelm them. Maybe we can design our platforms to have these breaks after modules with lots of content.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Teaching Gen Z - Maja</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I have noticed that a lot of things that my generation complains about - eg. stressful deadlines, traffic, having to be physically present at work rather than attending virtually, Gen Z is "speaking up" against. I applaud them for this because it might actually change things for the better for all of us.</p><p>Older generations have always seen the younger ones as non-compliant. This is not new. I do think that the degree of difference and the voices are a little louder - probably due to the technology available to express opinions and be heard.</p><p>How do we support these students? Work on their critical thinking skills. Teach them to question the sources of their information and teach them to communicate effectively to promote the changes they want to see in their world.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Teaching Gen Z - Daniela</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>In order to best support my students, I take time to get to know them. I start the year with a "get to know you" Google form where students can confidentially share information about themselves. They are not obligated to share anything personal but they often let me know if they are feeling stressed or nervous in the classroom. I also like to tell them about myself so that the sharing happens in both directions. Since my classes are now in person rather than online, I am able to engage with my students more outside of the classroom (attending their sports events or performances or just chatting in the hallway or cafeteria).  I also try to arrive to class a few minutes early to engage in casual conversation, play some music in the background and set a fun, relaxed tone (I would do this on zoom as well during the pandemic). I find that students are more likely to come to me with a concern or problem because I have shown an interest in who they are. We also have excellent supports in our school (guidance counsellors, social workers) that I direct students to if they need additional help.  </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Many of the things that we dislike about our students is what makes them who they are. If they want to be on their phones or the computer all the time, it is our job to figure out how we can incorporate activities using the platforms that they are familiar with. Pace I think is a really important idea covered because a lot of people nowadays seek this instant gratification. There are many platforms that provide this and it can be as complex or simple as you make it. An example can be a google form exit ticket and once people complete it you can release scores at the end for the class. The most challenging for me however is cyber bullying. I think it's also the hardest because online can be so impersonal since nothing is face to face and some students may never see those people in real-life or know what they look like so it's as if there is no consequence to the words they say.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Teaching Generation Z poses a distinct challenge as they have grown up immersed in technology and the internet. Traditional classroom settings may seem less engaging or relevant to them, especially considering the prevalence of cell phones in classrooms. While these devices offer benefits, such as quick access to information, they also present drawbacks, including potential misuse like texting or social media distractions, contributing to reduced attention spans.</p><p>Gen Z is a generation conditioned to question the status quo. They are vocal, assertive, and desire efficient learning experiences that resonate with them. They seek a clear understanding of why they are learning something, its practical applications, and how it benefits them. To address these preferences, I connect teaching to real-world problems and incorporate relevant resources such as Ted Talks and scientific videos. Hands-on projects and virtual labs, particularly through engaging platforms like Labster, cater to their desire for interactive and gamified learning experiences.</p><p>Recognizing Gen Z's diversity, I integrate discussions about their personal observations and experiences related to the concepts being taught. Using culturally relevant examples that align with their lived experiences enhances the learning environment. Mental health challenges, including anxiety and depression, affect Gen Z students, impacting their engagement in school. As educators, we prioritize social and emotional competency, fostering resilience and providing access to school-based mental health support. Addressing issues like bullying and violence contributes to creating a positive and safe school environment.</p><p>To accommodate diverse learning preferences, I offer flexibility in assignment submissions, allowing students to choose between group and individual formats. Providing options for expression, such as writing, audio, and podcasts, not only caters to their varied preferences but also reduces anxiety, reinforcing positive behaviors and decision-making. By adapting teaching methods to align with Gen Z's characteristics and needs, we create a more inclusive and effective learning environment.</p>]]></description>
