This is the stage that happens to start at birth until about the age of 18 months. This stage is when the child is not aware of what the world is around them and they rely on their parents or primary caregivers to take care of them and teach them to trust their parents and others. For example, the child will cry when being held by someone they don't know. My personal experience with this stage is hard to remember but I do know the stories my parents told me from when I was this age and they have always said that my siblings and I were the easiest and calmest babies they could have ever had, we were always really good with anyone who watched us or held us. To relate that to this stage we were trusting children. At this stage, I feel that I ended up trusting people just given the way that I am now and from what my parents say from when I was a child in this age group.

This stage happens from around 1 1/2 to about the age of 3. This stage is when the child learns to have a sense of independence. For example, the child will want to build a tower with blocks on their own. Again from stories, I have always heard that we were all able to keep ourselves content. Our parents would be able to leave us with one set of toys and they said they could have left us there forever because we were so content just learning new things and teaching ourselves things. I feel that I ended on the autonomy side of this stage.

Initiative Vs Guilt

This is the stage that typically happens from the age of 3 to the age of 6. This is when the child will start to insert themselves into more play with others. This stage allows the child to start to make mistakes and learn from them. For example, a child hitting another child and learning that it is not okay to hit others. At this stage in life, I do remember. The story I specifically remember was I came home from school one day with my glasses broken, I was pretty extremely bullied for most of my school years, and multiple bullies have broken multiple pairs of glasses, but I remember coming home with a zip lock bag of all of the glasses pieces and feeling so guilty for letting it happen and my parents having to buy me another pair of glasses. I feel that I ended up on the Initative side of this stage but also on the guilt.

Industry Vs Inferiority

This stage occurs from the age of 6-12. This is the age that children will learn to read and write along with the sum of things. They will really start to learn how to be independent. They will start to be more affected by their peer groups and those around them, along with feeling confident enough to complete their own goals. At this stage in my life, I remember loving coming home and telling my parents all of the new things that I had learned that day from school. For the quote for this, I really like page 276 of the text book states " There is an opportunity for growth represented by a sense of industry and a complementary risk represented by inferiority".

Identity Vs Role confusion

This stage is typically in the age range of 12-18. During this stage is when the child will learn a sense of self and their own personal identity, as well as search through and figure out their sense of personal beliefs, values, and goals. This is the stage my last birthday just got out of so I remember this pretty clearly. Ever since I was very young I have always wanted to be a nurse of some sort, but I remember specifically figuring out what kind of nurse I wanted to be. I remember feeling so content and safe knowing that I did have a plan for my life and knew somewhat of what the next stages in my life were going to be. I feel that I do know my identity and have for a few years, yet there is so much that I can still learn about myself, which I feel also comes with experience, the older I get the more I will know myself.

This stage happens from the age range of 18-40. This stage is when the person will typically start wanting a more intimate and long-term relationship with someone and their family. This is the stage that I am currently in. I am still really trying to figure out family relationships and how to be content and happy with some of them. As far as love relationships, I have been in the same relationship since I was 15 and he is let me tell you my best friend, therapist, and clearly boyfriend. Knowing my identity has been something that was learned and has ended with one person. I feel that I am definitely on the intimacy side of this stage.

This stage usually happens between the ages of 40-65 years old. This is the stage that people give back to their society. They can do this by working at a committed job, raising their children, and being part of community things like an organization. People typically will start to feel accomplished or unaccomplished at these ages. I have yet to be in this stage of life but my hopes are that I will be able to have children and be able to love on them and be content with the things I will have accomplished by this stage in my life. given I have yet to reach this point in life I am not really on either side of the stage.

This stage is from the age of 65 until death. This stage is when people tend to retire and settle down with life along with reflecting on what they have done and accomplished in their lives. I have yet to be in this stage but my hopes are that I will have children that are married and have their own children and be proud of what I have done in life and the people in it. Like previously I have yet to be at this stage but I hope that when I do get there that I will be on the ego integrity side of things.
