you can prevent damage wearing a anti electronic wrist band which will constantly earth you so there will be no static electricity that would damage the components. another way is to rub an unpainted metal in the computer such as the case this will discharge all of the static electricity in the body which means that the static electricity will go into the components.

Generating Static Electricity

You can generate static electricity on a simple level by rubbing certain materials together. Rubbing a cloth on a plastic rod is a good example of this. However, there are devices that can generate static electricity that can then be used in applications, demonstrations and experiments.

When you rub two materials together, some combinations can cause or create more static electricity than others. Since static electricity is the collection of electrically charged particles on the surface of a material, various materials have a tendency of either giving up electrons and becoming positive (+) in charge or attracting electrons and becoming negative (−) in charge.

The phenomenon of static electricity requires a separation of positive and negative charges. When two materials are in contact, electrons may move from one material to the other, which leaves an excess of positive charge on one material, and an equal negative charge on the other.

ESD damage is caused by repeatedly touching a component when you have not been grounded so the static electricity that has built up up travels into the component trying to find a low charged path attempting to equalize the potentials. after this has been done repeatedly this can leave visible holes with burn marks around the holes permanently damaging the components possibly making them completely unusable.
