Cholera is one of the most lethal diseases caused by non-clean water. It's an acute intestinal infection that causes severe diarrhea, dehydration and, if not treated quickly, death.

How does it spread?
People ingest contaminated water or food with the cholera bacteria. The symptoms of the disease are: large amounts of watery diarrhea, vomiting, muscle cramps and more. It may result in sunken eyes, cold skin... The dehydration can result in cyanosis too.
In the large intestine, bacteria multply at a high rate. The toxins from the bacteria penetrate through the intestinal walls. Our defences prevent us from absorbing water from digested food, which causes diarrhea.

How do you prevent it? ( in Africa )
· Water purification
· Clean hands
· Going to the toilet, not in the river
· Protecting the food from flies
This way, although it is still unsafe, the probabilities of getting and transmiting cholera will be much lower.

Treatment
In unprepared communities, cholera death rates can be as high as 50 percent. Sometimes it's inevitable to catch cholera, so we have to be able to treat it.
The most common error made by doctors is to underestimate the speed and volume of fluids required. The most effective way is by rehydrating the body, but a lot of people cannot afford it. Doctors suggest having a litre of boiling water with half a teaspoon of salt and 6 teaspoons of sugar. Also mashed bananas to add potassium and to improve the taste.
