The origins of the Order can be traced back to Bernard-Raymond Fabré-Palaprat who reconstituted the " l'Ordre du Temple"(otherwise known as OSMTH) in 1804. It was an intimation of the Order of the Knight Templar and it was founded in 1705. The order experienced a schism with one the Solar Temples founder Luc Jouret belonging to one of these factions the "Renewed Order of The Temple." Jouret along with Joseph Di Mambro in Geneva in 1984. On October 4-5th the Order, under the belief the apocalypse was near, had a mass murder/suicide killing 56 members in Canada and Switzerland. 16 more members killed themselves a year later and 5 more followed in 1997.

One of the fundamental parts of the Orders beliefs that a worldwide catastrophe was coming and they needed to ascend to a "higher spiritual plane." What triggered the infamous mass murder/suicide was Di Mambro declaring a recently born child was the antichrist. The Order put great emphasis on structure and the leadership used projectors make it look like they were having spiritual visions to keep their control over the cult and get members to pay fees to them to forward their desire to "establish the correct notion of power and authority in the world."

1. The Order called Jesus the "Solar God King
2. Di Mambro's own son Elie became a skeptic and brought up how Di Mambro and Jouret were using the fees required by members to live quite lavishly. This caused more members to investigate and uncovered that many of the spiritual "visions" were made by projectors causing them to leave. This likely helped push Di Mambro and Jouret to the murder/suicide.

How Members Were Made to be Obedient.

Obedience is the idea that an individual will go along with something an authority figure tells them to do. The Orders leadership used this by fabricating spiritual events to convince members they were spiritual authorities. They used this position to convince members to pay fees and eventually convinced them to go through with the murder/suicide.

How Members Conformed to The Order.

Conformity is the act in which societal pressures force someone to go along with things. This was vert present in the Order as members were expected to not challenge the hierarchy of the Order. Doing so could result in serious punishment(as Antonio and Nicky Dutoit, two members whos act of naming their child Emmanuel acted as a trigger for the murder suicide, sadly found out.) Even a year after the main sects and leaders had died several smaller sects killed themselves based on the idea of the catastrophe they had conformed to.

Groupthink is a phenomenon where people will go along with a group to keep harmony even when the thing is irrational. The cult shows a prime demonstration of this in effect with the Orders leadership usage of projectors to fake "spiritual visions." This was used to get members to go along with paying fees and it worked as for a while no member wanted to look to closely for fear of punishment for going against the group.

The Deindividuation of Members.

Deindividuation is the process in where those in a group will begin to lose their sense of identity. This is quite common in many cults and it showed up here as well. Many members did truly begin to lose their sense of identity and this can be the most clearly seen with the murder/suicide. Most normal people would refuse such an idea out of hand. However members had lost their sense of identity to such a point that they just went along with it with some even going through with it a year after the main incident.

Group Polarization is where a group will drive its members to more extreme ways of thinking. This can be easily seen in the Order driving its members to further and further extreme actions in service to it up to the murder/suicide.

Peripheral Route Persuasion is the usage of emotional and non fact based elements to persuade someone. The Order used this through religion and invoking fear of a world destroying event. The usage of peoples faith and their fear of the supposed cataclysm was on the Orders strongest tools for recruiting members.
