In 1890, they passed the separate car act. This act says that blacks and whites have separate but equal train cars. Anyone who broke this law was fined with 25$ or 20 days in jail. A group of black citizens raised enough money to overturn this act. Plessy had purchased a first-class passage from New Orleans to Louisiana. He had sat in the car for white passengers, later he was arrested for sitting in the wrong place. He had stated the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments even though the separate car act was unconstitutional if it applied to trains running out of Louisiana. it was constitutional for trains in Louisiana so Plessy was found guilty.
