The Mexican American War was started due to America wanting to expand and claim land to the west. Though a diplomatic effort was made to claim the land Mexico had no desire to strike a deal which later instigated a war between the two nations. After the loss Mexico was forced to sell the land for a fraction of the price initially negotiated allowing America to claim Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas, and parts of Colorado, Nevada and Utah.
