Rhetorical Awareness

This artifact I chose is U1A3 where I analyzed three different sources rhetorically. I used the genre, purpose, and context of three separate pieces to understand the writer's choices and to back up my theme. All three of the pieces I chose provided information on the borderlands and the struggles behind them. The author's choices in writing helped to give information on this. I used quotes from the texts and movies to show my rhetorical awareness. For example, “The text Hear my Voice by Warren Binford and Michael Garcia Bochenek, explains that the areas immigrant children are from are areas with immediate danger that they need to get away from. It then talks about how families are separated from each other and describes the awful, unsanitary, and unhealthy conditions these children face once they cross the border. Binford describes the children as filthy, hungry and scared (Binford 43).”This artifact helped my future writings by teaching my how to use quote integration and how to analyze rhetorical situations.

Critical Thinking and Composing

The artifact I chose for critical thinking and composing is U1A1, where I analyzed a children's story. I used research and critical thinking to get an idea of what the author's argument was and compose it into an essay. I researched the author to get context on her and used her story as evidence for my argument. For example,

“The story "Hear my Voice" uses a lot of description, dialogue, and point of view of the story. An example of this is when Binford says, “There were people who wanted to hurt us. There were people who had eyes on me whenever I went to school. Our grandfather saw the gang kill our neighbor. They threatened to kill him and so we all had to leave,” (Binford 15). This is an example of point of view, this is from the point of view of a young child who is traveling across the border with his family due to dangers in his home. The perspective makes us empathize with the child and puts us into his shoes.”

This can help me as a writer in the future when it comes to using critical thinking to convert research into an idea or using evidence to back up an argument.

The artifact I choose for conventions is my annotation matrix. In this artifact I used three sources and analyzed all of their rhetorics and this helped me to structure my U1A3. I used this table to practice citation methods and set up my design for the final assignment. For example, “The film's interview style was a very effective cinematic technique. It helped us understand the migrants point of view. “There was an immigration raid and they got us. I escaped from the immigration office. I saw a chance and slipped away” (Border South 00:20:25 - 00:21:08). This helps us understand the point of view of the migrant and how scared he must be of the office.”

I can use this with future assignments to help me organize and set them up.

The artifact I chose for Revision is U1A4, where I used help from other students and the teacher to revise my U1A3. I used the feedback I received from teachers and peers to make my U1A3 more efficient at getting its point across. In my workshop I said, “I think the peer workshop experience was helpful to me because I got a chance to see my classmates work and was inspired by some of the things they said that I could add to my essay. It helped me to look at my own work with a new perspective.” This indicates that I used the peer workshop to help me adjust my final draft. In the future, I will try to use peer advice to help my writing pieces improve.

Reflection

I chose my papelitos 5 as my reflection artifact. In this papelitos I reflected on Unit 1 and what I could have done better and what I did well. I used this reflection to help me with future units. The reflection said;

“Unit one went relatively well for me. I had a hard time coming to class, but I did good with getting my work in on time. Some things that I learned during unit 1 were how to use quote integrations and how to correctly use in text citations. I struggled with that at first, but then got better at it and will bring that into unit 2. Something I can do better going into unit 2 is having more motivation and not procrastinating my work. I have been very stressed out this semester and got overwhelmed with my work. I can work on this by setting time aside everyday to study.”

This can influence me as a writer to work harder and take more time towards writing.

Understanding our cultural contexts as writers at the University of Arizona

The artifact I chose for understanding our cultural contexts as writers at the University of Arizona was U2A2. This assignment I mapped out a draft of a fotonovel about Old Main which is a significant part of our school. Through this assignment, I developed an awareness of UArizona as a land-grant institution located in the Borderlands as I researched the Borderlands. In my assignment someone was supposed to say, “KIND OF?! It symbolizes the whole past, present and future of our school. Did you know it has survived multiple threats to destroy it in 1919, 1938, 1942, 1960, AND 1972. It is a symbolic representation of the growth and development of our school.” It shows how our school is still standing and how privileged we are to have that.
