I am an avid journal writer and always have been, so I decided for this creative assignment that I would create the first three pages of a journal about My Brother Sam is Dead, writing from the point of view of Tim complete with artwork and quotations. The assignment stated:

I knew that he often felt confused in the novel over which side of the Revolution to be on - Patriot or Loyalist, but by completing this assignment, I really got a chance to delve into his head and expand upon the little things such as Betsy asking Tim a simple question and got to expand upon Tim's reaction.

An assignment like this will get students analyzing character motivation, desires, and reactions. Students will need to examine the text for clues as to what emotion a character may be feeling and then figure out how to demonstrate that feeling to their own audience. By using quotations from the novel, the student will be forced to staying true to the nature of the character while putting their own interpretation on it. Students will get to create, which is the highest level of Bloom's Taxonomy.
