For literature to be considered multicultural, I believe that it's not only important that this kind of literature simply features other cultures. The token appearance of a person from a different country, different background, or different walk of life is not enough. I believe that true multicultural literature is an authentic look into life through the eyes of someone whose culture may not be the dominant one in their region. A culture is a way of life for people, encompassing so much (from customs, beliefs, history, language, arts etc) more than can be summed up or represented by way of a side character or a passing acknowledgement.   Children's literature should serve not only as a window, but a mirror. In that way, multicultural literature is one of the most essential parts of being a good teacher and good librarian. A diverse collection and atmosphere that fosters diversity is positive for every single student in a school. It gives a voice and a personal refection to one side while giving the other side a chance to broaden their knowledge and develop crucial empathy. Everyone is represented, everyone is learning. 

This, in my opinion, is an endeavor so important that it will take constant work. It's not enough to even just have a few trusty titles or to view incorporating multiculturalism in as some sort of trend or fad.  It's something that needs to be woven into the very fabric of everyday library life.  That's not an easy task, and that's why it's important to be aware of the infinite amount of resources there are to diversify both your library collection and your own mind. 

This "shelf" will serve as a springboard to some of those resources -- a (growing) taste of what is out there.
