History of Orchard Road:

How Orchard Road got its name: The road was named after the arces of nutmeg plantations that sprouted since 1830.Various fruit tree orchards, spice gardens and pepper farms also dotted the hillocks flanking both sides of the road.Other refrences to the street name also pointed to a keen gardener name Mr Orchard who owned a plantation at the corner of the now know Scotts Road and Orchard road.

Intro: Many have shop and dine at orchard road. It is also well know as a shopper's paradise. But only a few know about the history of orchard road, which what I am going to talk about.
-Orchard Road started as a country lane lined with bamboo hedge and shrubbery.

-
-There were still no residential areas in the south of orchard road in 1840
-There were reports of floods in the area and this would continus until 1960 when proper drainage solve the problem
-In 1848, there were still a vast number of nutmeg plantations and pepper farms.
-But their success was short lived as the world price of nutmeg collapsed and there were outbreak of distructive diseases and pests
-Few of these plantations were thus left by 1880
- With city development progressing inland from the Padang area, the plantations of the Orchard area gave way to residential development. Private houses and bungalows began to dominate the nearby Scotts Road and Tanglin Road.

-Orchard road also had some good times and bad times.
-One of the bad times was when a bomb went off on 10 March 1965 at the Macdonald house during the Indonesian Confrontation period. Another bomb with plastic explosives also went off on 17 March 1985 at Faber House.

-There were also some good events like during annual major events and local events such as Christmas & National Day Parade Orchard road would be decorated with festive lights. There also events where traffic would be close and the youths would be encouraged to gather on the streets for a mass dance party. This event was called ''Swing Singapore ''.
