Each panel is formed into the right weight and thickness by being passed through a skiving machine.

A fabric lining made of three layers is then sewn to every panel to prevent them from changing shape or size. Then, facing is applied where holes will be punched.

A juniper or incense-cedar plank with several long parallel grooves is cut to fashion a "slat," and the graphite/clay strings are inserted into the grooves. Another grooved plank is glued on top, and the whole assembly is then cut into individual pencils.
