Event #1 The Enlightenment

The Enlightenment was all about discovering reason over superstition. People wanted reliable sources of information. These ideas influenced people's thoughts on government, rights, the church, and society in general. I chose the scarecrow's song because he sings about wanting a brain to have his own thoughts. The lyrics, "And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts are busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

I'd unravel ev'ry riddle for my
Individdle
In trouble or in pain
With the thoughts that you'll be thinkin'
You could be another Lincoln
If you only had a brain" relate to how Enlightened thinking was focused on expanding knowledge.

Event #2 Haitian Revolution

The desire for freedom sparks most revolutions, and the Haitian Revolution was no exception. However, the Haitian Revolution had key factors that made it unique. It was the first successful slave revolt, challenged European control, and incorporated radical revolutionary ideas. The Haitians also emphasized Enlightenment principles such as individual rights, equality, and the liberation of slavery. Their constitution reflects these ideas. The Haitians believed in equal rights even before some other countries did. I chose this song to represent the Haitian Revolution because it was a confusing time but they weren't afraid to defend what was right as the lyrics say, "This is the time, this is the place

So we look for the future...

This is the world we live in

And these are the hands we're given
Use them and let's start trying
To make it a place worth living in"

They were looking to build a just and fair government for the future.

Event #3 The Monroe Doctrine

This song fits the Monroe Doctrine perfectly because it represents the no-tolerance for further European colonization in the U.S. The Monroe Doctrine had four basic points. These points were the U.S. was going to avoid foreign affairs with Europe, recognized and would not interfere with other colonies in the Americas, the Western Hemisphere was closed for further colonization, and if a European country tried to interfere with American colonies then it would be seen as a threat to the U.S. The lyrics that fit the Monroe Doctrine are " We're not gonna take it
No, we ain't gonna take it
We're not gonna take it anymore

We've got the right to choose, and
There ain't no way we'll lose it
This is our life, this is our song
We'll fight the powers that be, just
Don't pick on our destiny, 'cause
You don't know us, you don't belong."

For Toussaint L'Ouverture, I chose Freedom! '90 because this song is about breaking free. L'Ouverture, who was born into slavery, led a successful slave revolt in Saint-Domingue, Haiti. For this, he is nicknamed the father of the Haitian Revolution. The lyrics, "I don't belong to you...

Freedom (I won't let you down)
Freedom (I will not give you up)
Freedom (Gotta have some faith in the sound)," represents L'Ouverture's motive to overcome slavery for the Haitian people.

Event #5 Father Miguel Hidalgo

Father Miguel Hidalgo is known as the Father of Mexican Independence. He was greatly influenced by Enlightened thinking as he believed in equality of all men and personal liberty. Appropriately, I chose Freedom by Pharrell Williams to represent him. In this song, Williams sings about how all creation is intertwined and connected. His message is to have greater appreciation for nature and culture. This relates to Father Hidalgo as he fought for independence and liberty for the Mexican people.
