For example , The Public Housing Scheme (PHS) enables many Singaporeans to own their own homes through the provision of housing grants . A couple who applies for public housing for the first time is eligible for the Special Central Provident Fund (CPF) Housing Grant and may qualify for the Additional CPF Housing Grant. This will let them feel that they have a stake in Singapore’s future and be more willing to be involved in working towards the good of society. Example: One example of providing a stake for everyone is Our Singapore Conversation which was a survey which included over 47000 Singaporeans. Its purpose was to acquire their views on local issues such as housing and job opportunities.

Explanation: As people were given an opportunity to voice out their thoughts, this made them feel like they had the ability to make an impact on Singapore’s future, thus strengthening their sense of belonging which in tandem, encouraged them to contribute to Singapore’s development. The freedom of speech allows the Government to receive public opinion to improve governance of Singapore.

  • Good governance means the involvement of citizens in decision making. As a leader, he has to have moral values so that the citizens can trust him and will not protest against him, thus not having any conflicts against one another, resulting in good governance.

  • The principle for our group is having good leadership. A good leader is one who decides what is beneficial to society and possess traits of good moral character, like foresight, integrity and responsibility.
  • Examples of leaders who have good leadership is Abraham Lincoln. He fought for the rights of slaves and African-Americans. He had the courage to speak up for them, showing his good leadership by standing up for what he thinks is right.
  • The good decisions made will ultimately for the betterment of society. With incompetent leaders, they are incapable of making good decisions, therefore causing the downfall of society.

An example is Singapore’s dilemma deciding whether casinos should be a part of the Integrated Resorts of Singapore. The government balances the factors between the pros and cons of building a casino like how it can improve Singapore’s status among people of other countries as not only hospitable but also an enjoyable place to stay and how it can promote gambling which may not be a good thing (addiction).     • The government needs to manage citizens’ needs and interests and also to remain forward looking and make decisions that will benefit people in future
    • Examples:
    • integrated resorts (IR)-> economic benefits vs social costs
    • Thomson East Coast line -> demolishing pearls centre vs benefitting commuters
    • The government had to make a decision as the tension between economic benefits and social costs was difficult to resolve. By anticipating change and staying relevant, the government sought after potential economic benefits such as job opportunities and higher revenue from tourists. The government anticipated higher gambling rates and problem gambling and thus set up the national council of problem gambling to conduct public education and outreach of problem gambling prevention and counselling services
    • the HSR project would cause some short term environmental concerns such as air, water and noise impacts, soil erosion and sedimentation.
      However, in the Long term, it would cause fuel and carbon dioxide emissions savings. It is projected that by the 10th year of operation, about 19 million litres of fuel will be saved from fewer vehicles on the roads. Additionally, the electric-powered HSR will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles and this can amount to up to 55 million kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions saved.

This is because when people are rewarded according to how much effort they put in, they are motivated to work harder and portray a good example to others.   • Meritocracy refers to a system that distributes opportunities to enable future successes. People are rewarded according to the effort they put in rather than factors such as their race / religion or socio-economic background . When people are rewarded based on their abilities and effort they are encouraged to work hard 
  • Meritocracy survives on the idea that talent and hard work will be rewarded.Students who perform well in their studies and CCA are rewarded in ways to help them excel further in their education. The Edusave Scholarship and Merit Bursary schemes reward the TOP 10 per cent and 25 per cent of school students respectively. Also, first launched in 2009, the Good Neighbour Award (GNA) recognises and honours residents who go the extra mile to enrich their community with exemplary acts of care and neighbourliness. The Award is jointly organised by HDB and People's Association (PA), and supported by the Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) and Singapore Press Holdings (SPH).
    • 3.This award does not take into consideration the receipients' backgrounds. It is all about the effort that they put in. Meritocracy shows unbiasness nor hierarchy, giving everyone a fair share in society.
