In high school I could speed read and usually outread my co-students. When I was asked to explain what I just read, I realized I had retained very little. This was a hitch in my step for studying and learning. At this point I began to look into why and what to do to correct this problem. Learning by sight, hearing, hands on and even meditaiton became something for me to try in every new learning situation.

When I was the I.S.S. supervisor I had numerous students failing their civics class and I knew first hand the teacher used a LOT of definitions in his class on tests and quizes. I began to teach each student to remember one or two words and attach it to the word they were defining. We went over and over the word and connected just a couple words in the definition until it was drilled in their brains and they could rip off the answer faster and faster. This technique is not going to be the answer always, of course, but it is one way to figure out how your brain works and a way to get through something you may not ever use again or actually may use a lot later. I will say the civics teacher questioned how the students were beginning to succeed in his class due to our time studying. I did not want him to think I was lessening the importance of what he was teaching, but I was helping them learn a new way to study and connect. I taught my own daughter to do this technique with definitions. She is the total opposite of me and can read fast and comprehends every word. She can recite what she read with no problem at all. Understanding what area of metacogniton you are strong in and if you have a weak area, are pertinent to learning and succeeding in education.

Whether you have to read things numerous times or you have to highlight and take notes. Everyone has to learn how studying works for them. Metagcognition can be difficult to figure out and nail down according to each student or individual. Once the light comes on studying and retaining becomes easy!

Ultimately we all have a very unique way of learning and growing. Our goal is all the same and that is to help our future learn, grow and succeed. In our helping students determine the easiest way for them to learn and retain the knowledge they need to succeed, we are creating paths of success for us all! Learning how others learn and what techniques work best will teach us all new ways and open doors for students yet to come. This is an exciting journey and I am proud to be a part of it.

One of the biggest learning stepstones experienced for me was when I actually had to structure and teach a subject to students

As a young adult I received my First Degree black belt and was offered the chance to teach Tae Kwon Do to 4-5 year old students. I was AMAZED at how much I learned myself teaching these young students step by step martial art blocks, kicks, throws and forms. I have carried with me the experience and how much I learned myself as an instructor. Teaching these little people every little part and piece to something adult minds had a hard time capturing and retaining. I fully intend to continue to carry that lesson and use it going forward with our high school students in all subjects I have the opportunity to help them learn.
