Caroline Chisholm was born on the 30th of May 1808. She was the last and sixteenth child of William Jones, and her parents were Caroline and William Jones. Her father was a well-to-do farmer. She lived in Northampton, England until September 1838 when the Chisholm’s decided to take leave in Windsor, Sydney, Australia. She married Archibald Chisholm who was 13 years her senior in 1830 and had 6 children. Caroline became a familiar figure on the wharves as she always met the immigrant ships when they came in. She found places for immigrant girls. She also spent time from 1846-1854 in England, raising funds for immigrant families. Her health broke done in 1857, and her family returned to England in 1966. On the 25th of March 1877, Caroline Chisholm passed away at the age of 69. The living and working conditions during this 1800’s time weren’t the best. Caroline Chisholm grew up and lived during the industrial revolution era, which is known for its low wages and harsh conditions. Almost every child had to work in unsafe factories with ridiculously long hours. Poverty was common. Diseases were extremely common and spread quickly throughout the 1800s. Pollution was everywhere and increasing rapidly as well. In Australia, there were many average jobs, and the pay was really low. Food always had to be fresh and freshly prepared as there were no fridges. Children rarely got an education and when they did it was cheap and not good. They sometimes had to walk a long way (3-4 miles) to get to school. All of this could have easily convinced her to make sure no child had to go through an era like hers, and to become a reformer.

2. How 'The Good Samaritan' and 'Jesus feeds the 5 thousand' inspired Caroline Chisholm

MIRACLE STORY

6 Sometime after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near.

5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do

7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”

8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”

10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

14 After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

This miracle story relates to Caroline Chisholm and her mission as it shows Jesus helping the poor and underprivileged by giving them food and helping them, which is what her main mission is about. It also relates to Caroline Chisholm as she gave food and shelter to many immigrants that came from the Sydney pier which is what Jesus does in this story.

THE PARABLE OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN
25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[a]; and, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’[b]”

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?”

30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he travelled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine.

Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c]and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.

The parable, ‘The Good Samaritan’, is about loving thy neighbour. This parable relates to Caroline Chisholm's mission because it is about loving everyone and helping anyone in need or suffering, which is what Caroline Chisholm's mission was all about and was also what she valued. Her main belief was to 'love thy neighbour' which is also the main message in this parable.

3. Prayers/Spiritual practices that nourished Caroline Chisholm

Caroline Chisholm did not write/create any prayers in her lifetime. I feel that the prayers that she would have used included things such as having compassion, helping others and spreading peace. The two main prayers I think she would have used are the peace prayer and a prayer of compassion.
Lord make me an instrument of your peace
Where there is hatred let me sow love
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith
Where there is despair, hope
Where there is darkness, light
And where there is sadness, joy

O divine master grant that I may
not so much seek to be consoled as to console
to be understood as to understand
To be loved as to love
For it is in giving that we receive
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned
And it's in dying that we are born to eternal life
Amen
I feel that Caroline Chisholm would have used the peace prayer as it covers compassion, helping others and spreading peace. I also think she would have used this prayer as it is a very uplifting and comforting prayer and she worked with many people who had been through a lot in their lives so she may have shared this prayer for others as well.
God in heaven, we offer our deepest appreciation for the many blessings you shower upon us every day. We are truly humbled by the bounty of your graces. Through this prayer, we ask for the compassion to follow the inspiring example of the good Samaritan. Help us to embrace and bring comfort to those suffering immensely overseas. Amen.
I feel that Caroline Chisholm would have used this prayer of compassion as it is very easy and quick to learn and it also shows the idea of helping others which was one of her main missions. I also think she would have used this prayer as it is a really nice and sweet prayer which is what many people described her personality as.

Unfortunately, Caroline Chisholm wrote very few writings in her lifetime but luckily several biographies have been written, as well as a whole support centre being named after her. One of the writings she wrote in 1842 has some facts about her thoughts on female immigration, but it isn't much. It talks a little about her hardships and her love for God, but that is all. One biography written is by the Australian Dictionary of Biography that has extensive facts about Caroline Chisholm and has a detailed overview of her whole life. It talks about what she believed in and how she got to where she ended up. This biography also talks about her successes and failures. She also has a biography on Britannica.com which has many knowledge and facts about her life. It has many features similar to the last biography, but it also has what she did in Australia in more detail. Many people who had met Caroline during this time also wrote, but only about her amazing ability to love thy neighbour. The key message behind the main amount of these writings is important as it talks about how she changed Australia into what it is today. Also the message is that she lived her life to help people in need of help, and that others should too.

5. Church response that Inspired Caroline Chisholm

Rerum Novarum was an encyclical published by Pope Leo XIII in 1891; addressed to the bishops of the Catholic Church. Leo XIII starts his reflections by drawing attention to the social difficulties of the day. After that, he then explains five main issues. These issues include: the role of the state, private property, the workers right to a just wage, the right of the church to speak on social issues and the importance of worker association. Leo also talks a bit about the industrial revolution. He states that mankind has been encouraged by the industrial revolution to ask questions about many social issues such as moral values and the relationship between employer and employee. He specifically discusses the horrible conditions of the poor and talks about how the bishops should refute the wrongs of these circumstances. He ends with a small conclusion. This encyclical is relevant to the words and actions of Caroline Chisholm in many ways. One of the main ways it is relevant is that it talks about the industrial revolution which is the time when Caroline Chisholm grew up. Another way this encyclical is relevant to Caroline’s mission is that it talks about helping people and making living conditions easier for the poverty stricken which is what her main mission was; helping people was what she believed in.

Caroline Chisholm worked to better the lives of those affected by injustice and is often called a prophet because of her actions against unjust situations. She is well-known for her respect for human dignity and all aspects of her work. The words and actions of Caroline Chisholm were a demonstration of the Priestly, Prophetic and Kingly work of Jesus in many ways. A demonstration of the priestly was when she was faced with the desperate situation of women in Sydney, she prayed and fasted in order to discern Gods will for her. A demonstration of the prophetic was when Caroline Chisholm spoke up and built a home when she found out the immigrants weren’t being excepted into Australian society. She became a voice for the people, especially female immigrants. Lastly, a demonstration of the kingly was when she did things such as, spending time from 1846-1854 in England to raise funds for immigrant families. She also founded a female school which provided many valuable skills such as housekeeping, cooking, nursing reading and writing. Caroline set up homes for immigrants in rural areas of Sydney and she toured the whole of New South Wales and even met the governor in an effort to bring changes to get statements to encourage fresh immigrants.

The Caroline Chisholm society demonstrates the Priestly, Prophetic and Kingly work of Jesus almost exactly like Caroline Chisholm. This society has been inspired by the story of 'Flora' and how Caroline supported her when she was pregnant. This society helps women in any situation similar to Flora’s. They show a lot of assistance towards pregnant women, new mothers, new families and women suffering from domestic violence and trying to get away by offering assistance and offer material goods to help with financial stress. They also help with emotional support. This society has many similar beliefs and values to Caroline Chisholm such as compassion and the support of social injustice. The Caroline Chisholm Society aims to help anyone in need and also aims to show a better understanding and awareness of welfare rights. It is through this society and others alike that Caroline’s mission continues in today's society.
