-1. " Suddenly she notices something in a half-opened closet. She springs up and crosses to it, and removes a whiskey bottle. She pours a half tumbler of whiskey and tosses it down" (8).

-2. "She [Stella] goes into the kitchen, finds a glass and pours a shot of whiskey into it [for Blanche]" (83).

-3. "Well, now you talk. Open your pretty mouth and talk while I look around for some liquor! I know you must have some liquor on the place! Where could it be, I wonder? Oh, I spy, I spy! 
[She rushes to the closet and removes the bottle; she is shaking all over and panting for breath as she tries to laugh. The bottle nearly slips from her grasp.]" (9).

-4. "[She sits down shaking, taking a grateful drink. She holds the glass in both hands and continues to laugh a little.]" (84).
5. "[She throws back her head with convulsive, sobbing laughter. Then she repeats the statement, gasps, and drinks" (128).

-All of these examples have one major thing in common: Blanche. Alcohol is a constant in a world of variability for Blanche. Her constant drinking is the primary motive behind much of her behavior. However, the alcohol leads her (and many others in the play) to erratic and sometimes dangerous behavior, often causing more harm for her than good.

-Whiskey is the drink of choice in the play. It was originally used as a medicine, an internal anesthetic and external antibiotic. In Ireland, it was distilled from barley beer between the years 1100 and 1300 as liquor and wines were not easily obtained there, and its popularity grew as the years passed.

-Although alcohol can lead to some amusing encounters between the characters, it can be concluded that it, overall, does more harm than good over the course of the play. It leads to dangerous situations, erratic and violent behavior, and bouts of depression and panic of past memories.
