Incidental and Informal Learning occur as we engage in the activities and interactions of everyday life.

As children we learn as much or more from our friends in the school yard than we do from our teachers in the classroom.
 We learn about social structures, hierarchies, modes of communication and the rules and reward systems of the games we play.

Prompting is the practice of indicating or initiating the next step in an activity.
As part of a skills development process it involves modeling or suggesting to the learner that they make the next move: “ You have turned on the oven and mixed the ingredients. The cake mix is ready to go into the pan now”.

Fading means withdrawing the prompts to increase the learner’s independence.
Remove the prompt and watch for independent action or initiative: “I won’t remind him to grease the pan yet, let’s see if he does it without me prompting him to”.
