I thought the self reflection tool was very valuable. I was able to say that I did most of the things on the assessment. I think that is partly because I teach students to use inquiry and 5E instruction. Before I started doing this I'm not sure that I would have been aware of as many things on the protocol. I think the protocol could be very helpful both to students in the classroom to reflect on their thinking and to teachers as they plan inquiry based activities. By looking at the protocol when planning teachers would be able to design better inquiry activities and evaluate the difference between something that is truly and inquiry and something that is just a hands-on activity.

I considered the self reflection tool very pertinent.
It leads to a reflection and a meta-reflection on the reasons that were in the genesis of what was done.
I had never done this approach. After conducting an experimental activity I usually ask questions of deepening but never questioned how the students did the process. Obvious partnership but it did not. Very relevant.
An approach of this kind followed by a reflection on the process allows the teacher to validate the collection of information, data collection, translation into facts and not opinions.
It allows students to perceive how science is done and how to apply a scientific method, developing critical thinking skills

Inquiry is empowering. It allows students to gain greater control of their learning, and to become more critical of their progress. Students are asked to actively contribute to developing the criteria for their success, and have the chance to reflect which in today's fast world this is given very little opportunity. The smiles and enthusiasm I saw on their faces when I showed the video of the experiment and the enjoyment they found when they went home and did the experiment themselves was an amazing experience. In fact it was also the first time that ALL of the did their homework :)

Science should be taught as a method of thinking trough experiments. IBL is an excellent method how to teach students critical problem solving, reflection of information, communication and collaboration. The self reflection questionnaire is on of the most important tool used for formative assessment and through it we can get an instant feedback from students.

The main point of IBL method, I think, is to construct and formalize (for instance, using a table) a clear and readable database input (the protocol in the example), and a clar and readable database output (the results in the example).Once we have a clear view of the results, and especially a quantitative evaluation of the results, we can check the validity of our hypotheses and, finally, we can produce a quantitative model of the results (i.e., a law).

I found the self reflection document very useful as it divides the process in three parts: 1) performing the research (the one we tend to focus in as teachers, and the one we tend to provide the student with rather than allowing him to explore and creat) 2) recording your investigation (this is typically assessed in traditional teacher centered lesson plans) and 3) supporting the investigation (from my point of view, this is the part that we tend to forget or rush through, but it is actually the one that will engage students and lead them to acquire theoretical knowledge about the topic). In this sense, it provides a linear path to transform science lessons from case studies/ hands on projects into meaningful learning in context.

In my opinion, a self-reflection is always useful in order to evaluate our teaching method.

From my point of view, if I were a student, I would find inquiry-based learning much more attractive.
On the other hand, I will have to analyze how this method can be adapted to the students I currently have:
- Very varied adolescent people, many of them go to class because of obligation, with little desire to learn.
- Large groups, between 25 and 30 students.
Despite this, I am convinced that it is more important to awaken curiosity and interest in learning, than to transmit knowledge.

I found the self -reflection tool to be very useful in analysing how I created my methodology, carried out the experiment and analysed my results and then made my conclusions.
In Ireland, students have traditionally been given the methodology and then shown how to carry out the experiment/activity. In the last few years, the change to IBL is very good to encourage creative problem solving and critical thinking and active learning.
The questions posed in this self -reflection tool are excellent for both students and teachers when carrying out research to make sure every aspect is covered and thought about …from it being a fair test, large enough sample size, results accurately recorded, and conclusions made.

When carrying out the investigation I think following the given instructions I was able to accomplish all the items.

While recording the investigation I was not very systematic so I didn´t include in my record a clear statement of the inquiry question or problem, and also my records did not indicate what data were collected and how they were collected.

Finally, supporting the investigation I was not asked to make predictions.

Also, by trying to fill out that "form" I got to know some of the characteristics associated with IBL.

I've been wanting to master IBL for a long time now, and I have always seen the merits of it because Science shouldn't be just presenting facts but getting the students comfortable and better able to go through the scientific method, start to finish. It was a quite interesting experiment as it was introduced with a small story from everydaylife. I'm going to introduce my students with this experiment in exactly the same way.

Unfortunately, it is very often the case (like in my school) that teachers focus to much on facts and forget that these facts will be of no use if the students do not understand the concept behind them. The idea of "hands-on and minds-on" therefore should be spread and applied especially in science subjects. The self-reflecting tool helps the teachers to understand the importance of slef-reflexion and gives them the opportunity to find out if they themselves know how to self-reflect. The most important thing to bring in as a teacher is dynamic and also to wake up new interests. Because of IBL-tools you have a lot of opportunities and chances to bring in new ideas and create a new kind of teaching. The most important thing is, that students are learning by doing. And because of the experiments, which they will do on their own, they will learn a lot more than reading a lot of sites in their book.
