I know this because, the beaks of the finch got longer and thicker in 1978 by 1 mm. The finches beaks changed in thickness and in length by about 1 mm by eating different foods that they didn't have before. Natural selection is when animals are better suited to the environment. This means that only the birds with the better characteristics survived by being better suited to the environment to get other food. Also, the portulaca seeds went from an average of about 9 seeds per meter by month in 1975 and 1976 to about 0 per meter per month in 1977. This shortage of portulaca seeds means the birds who had longer beaks survived because they were able to get the seeds that they needed. They had to get other seeds and food which was more difficult to get, so only the ones who achieved this goal, survived. The rainfall on Daphne Major also increased by 110 mm in 1977 due to the drought. This decrease in rainfall caused the birds who were better suited to the environment to survive better than the birds who aren't, due to the lack of water. The birds with longer beaks can get water from the seeds better than the ones with short beaks. This causes the birds with short beaks to have less food and water.
