Roethke’s use of these tools implies that while the child experiences the abuse, he or she is still blind to the reality of his or her own situation, and loves their father deeply.

The language and diction used in the poem causes the reader to see a father and child dancing on the surface, but upon further analysis, it can be interpreted that under the disguise of a dance, the father is actually physically abusing the child.

Loyalty Transcends Morality. One who is truly loyal discards his or her morals to stay loyal, just as a parent child relationship. A Godly father to a subordinate and loyal son relationship as depicted in Theodore Rothke’s Poem “My Papa’s Waltz”, strengthened by a descriptive diction portraying the father as not a father but a king by not saying father once in the poem, the line “hung on like death” which emphasizes loyalty over retrospect and analyzation, and the depiction of the father as much taller than the speaker to emphasize the role model the father was to the speaker.

In the story “My Papa’s Waltz” point of view and imagery are used to describe how a child views their father. The relationship between the child and father seems abusive when the child talks about how the father comes home with whiskey on his breath and romping around the kitchen. Another example of imagery is when the child is describing how his father was grabbing his wrist and with every step the father missed the child’s ear would scrape a buckle. This would mean that the father is beating his son with a belt but he is so uncoordinated that he is unable to hit the child straight on. The child knows that the father is intoxicated so he does not blame his father for his violent actions and loves his father no matter what.

After reading and analyzing "My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Roethike it can be understood that the speaker had a difficult relationship with his father. Throughout the poem specific techniques and rhetorical devices are used to convey this difficult and harsh relationship between the speaker and the father. In the poem "My Papa's Waltz" the author uses descriptive language, imagery, and a first person point of view to create an intimate and personal connection between the speaker and the subject(father), to enforce the reader's understanding that the relationship shown was unhealthy.

In the poem written by Theodore Roethke , the poem opens "The whiskey on his breath" . The distinctive and revealing opening stanza symbolizes the relationship between the author and his father. "Whiskey", this very word captivates the readers attention while giving an implied understanding of their toxic relationship. Roethke utilizes literary devices like diction, imagery and an alternating rhyme scheme to give the reader an understanding to the complexity of love and fear of his relationship with his father.
