         <description><![CDATA[<div>Pros:<br>- fast<br>- easy to understand<br>- clear, large enough to see easily<br>- generalizable to majority of the world's populations<br><br>Cons:<br>- includes processed foods<br>- compares positive vs. negative components, therefore the consumer doesn't have the full picture of just how much of each there is<br>- per the second example, some food items are not consumed by themselves, so the combinations or serving sizes of foods is not considered<br>- more interpretive than informative --&gt; some populations may not understand whole picture<br>- this system does not replace health literacy</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Nutrient warning labels</strong> are applied to food and drink products that exceed thresholds for various risk nutrients.<br>For each nutrient exceeded, products are required to carry a <strong>stop sign warning</strong>.<br>Nutrient warning labels clearly signal the presence (or absence) of high levels of risk nutrients. In doing so, they are specifically designed to highlight unhealthy choices only.<br><strong>Advantage</strong>: Helpful in identifying <strong>foods</strong> and beverages that are high in sugar, salt, fat, or calories, and they discourage people from purchasing such products.<br><strong>Relevance: </strong>A nutrient warning policy is a common sense response to rising rates of diet-related disease.&nbsp;<br>A study done in Jamaica showed the following:" Participants shown products with octagonal warnings were nine times more likely to correctly identify those that were excessive in sugars, saturated fats or sodium, compared to those shown products with nutrition facts up front. Participants shown products with the magnifying glass were 5.8 times more likely to correctly identify products with excess nutrients, and participants shown products with the traffic light were 3.4 times more likely to do so."</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>HSR is a <strong>voluntary</strong> scheme<ul><li>manufacturers can display good scores on healthier products but can leave poorer scores off less healthy ones&nbsp;</li></ul></li><li>HSR s<strong>hould only be used to compare similar products </strong>- not two dissimilar products so more education is needed</li><li>HSR is <strong>for packaged products only</strong><em> - leaves out fruits and veggies that are not packaged and whole</em></li><li><strong>All sugars are not equal! </strong>HSR does not distinguish between natural and added sugar</li><li>HSR <strong>can be manipulated to reflect what the product is served with</strong>, rather than the product alone. T<strong>his can inflate a product’s score</strong> and not give a true reflection of the product itself.<ul><li>For example: Milo was able to gain a 4.5-star rating based on the serving suggestion of having 2 teaspoons with a tall glass (400mL) of skim milk. While Uncle Toby’s oat products recommend adding chopped fruit and bananas.</li></ul></li><li>algorithm d<strong>oes not take into account the wholegrain content of products</strong>. That’s a real shame, as wholegrain foods provide far more nutrients (iron, b vitamins and antioxidants, for example) compared to refined grain products</li></ul>]]></description>
