Create a book review video over the biography you read for your novel study. Discuss who your book is about, what you thought of the book and the person you read about, and your opinions on the author's writing. Then, include a picture post showing an event discussed in the book and describe its importance to your person's life during the American Revolution. Finally, comment on one other person's post who read about another person.

The standards which will be covered in this assignment are:
-ELAGSE4RI1: Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
-ELAGSE4RI3: Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text.
-ELAGSE4SL1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.

This assignment will be a formative assessment to determine what students have learned after reading a biography of an influential person from the American Revolution within book study groups. They will submit a video recording book review, post a picture explaining an event discussed in the book, and comment on peer posts. Students will demonstrate their understanding of key details and events within informational texts. They should be able to make inferences about their texts based on the descriptions of the people their texts are based on. Additionally, they should show understanding of comparing and contrasting between historical texts as they comment on peer work.

I have created a Padlet assignment for students to complete as a cross-curricular activity. After completing a book study on an influential person from the Revolutionary War, students will create posts to show their learning. I teach 4th grade ELA, and use these book studies as my students are learning about the American Revolution in Social Studies. Therefore, students are learning content among multiple content areas, and this will be a space for them to show their learning.

I chose this tool because of its interactive elements for students. Roblyer and Hughes (2018) discuss the many benefits of using technological learning platforms, such as encouraging student research and collaboration, enabling timely and easy teacher feedback, and showing evidence of learning in an informal setting. My 4th grade students have one-to-one technology, which they have grown skilled in using throughout the years. I have used Padlet with my students before, and they have found it highly engaging. Being able to use technology, communicate orally to share learning, and see work from peers allows students to more deeply engage with their learning to show critical thinking skills involved in using both print and online media sources.
