Summary: Chris McCandless, who is a bit of a foolhardy(p.5), is picked up at the side of the road by a man named Jim Gallien in his car. Jim then told asked Chris where he was trying to go, Chris told him Stampede Trail. Chris was trying to make it to the unnavigable(p.6) and harsh conditions(p.5) of the wild. He sounded very gung ho(p.6) about going into the trackless wilderness(p.5) by himself and with very little supplies.

Analyze: I honestly think he should've gotten some more supplies before he had gone into the bush, but he seemed like he was ready. It's actually insane that he decided to do that by himself because never would I decide to do something like this. But I will respect his decision because he decided to chase his dreams and nothing was possibly going to stop him.
#Lowkeybuggin #GoneInsane #Freedom

Growing up I never really went into the wild besides going to the zoo. Besides the zoo, the wildest place I've been to is probably my own imagination. My family has never really done much traveling. We live the same day every day and it gets pretty boring sometimes. Maybe we should travel more to experience new things I guess. But I have never really been who likes going out, I like to stay home and just relax. I also don't like the feeling of being lost in a new place; I find it better to know where I am, if that makes sense.

The farthest I think we traveled to was Washington state and it was to visit family that we have over there. Washington is nice and all but they have nothing going on over there. All they have is the forest and Nirvana, which seemed kind of boring to me lol; no but it was actually a really beautiful place. It would be a nice place to move to when you're retired and don't want to deal with people.

Eventually, If I'm allowed to then I would like to travel. I'm not sure if I would go out of the country, but I would for sure travel within the country. Actually, I think Japan would be a crazy trip, so I'd like to go there maybe. I would probably go by myself because I don't have many friends. I think it would be nicer to see things by myself just to get my own perspective on things.

Summary: In this little town, Carthage, South Dakota with a population (p.15) of 274 is where Chris meets Wayne Westerberg for the first time. Wayne mentions that he tends to pick up many hitchhikers and has them work for him, but many of them weren't good workers since most didn't want to work in the first place. Chris ends up working for Wayne for a while, and Wayne says that Chris is the best worker that he has ever had due to the fact that he would do any job and would always finish it. Chris was a very ethical (p.18) man according to Wayne. This is odd considering Chris was very footloose (p.15). Wayne would later be arrested for selling illegal black boxes(p.19), but Chris had already by then. Chris sent one last letter to his real family (p.20) and it was his school transcript; he ended up with a 3.7 GPA.

Analyze: During Chris' time working for Wayne, he seemed to have created a close bond with Wayne. Wayne really admired Chris' work ethic and how he wouldn't say no to a dirty and grimy job. And for his family, I can understand why he didn't like his family, but he could have tried a simpler solution. He left them without an explanation and I would imagine that his family was clueless and devasted due to his disappearance.
#breakingmyback #smarterthanpplthought #goodbye

Summary: Chris reaches Bullhead City(p.39) and he is no longer taking photos or keeping his journal. He describes the city as very modern and a tourist trap. He ended up spending two months in Bullhead city and said it was a nice place to stay during the winter. During his time there he ended up working at a Mcdonald's(p.39). While working there was he didn't really make friends because everyone thought he was crazy since all he talked about was nature and the forest. He tried hiding that he was a drifter(p.41) from the rest of the employees by telling them he lived across the river(p.41). Later on, an old man named Charlie lets Chris stay in an old trailer of his. Then, Charlie tries to remember things about Chris. Charlie was a nervous man with rheumy eyes(p.42) and a growth of white stubble across his chin. He recalls Chris being a pretty nice guy. Chris arrived at the Slabs(p.43) and volunteered to help Burres and made some sales for her. In the end, Burres was worried about Chris but thought that we would make it back in one piece.

Analyze: It was kind of odd that Chris ended up working at a Mcdonald's and worked there for quite some time too. I wonder what he liked so much about this city that he decided to stay there for 2 months. Also, Charlie is such a nice person for letting a random stranger stay in his trailer.
#Gettingbread #Trailerlivin #hatesocks

Summary: Chris McCandless meets Ron Franz during his journey. Ron was a war veteran and he had been through a lot of pain in his life. His wife and his only child were killed by a drunk driver. His son was due to graduate from medical school the following June. Franz started hitting the whiskey(p.50) hard during this time. When Ron met Chris he thought that Chris didn't have an education(p.51), but in reality, Chris had already finished school. Chris then told Ron that he's living the way he is by choice(p.51) and not because has to. As time went on Ron got really attached to Chris, as if Chris were his son. So, Ron asked Chris if he could adopt him or if Chris would like to be his grandson(p.55). Ron ended up finding out that Chris had died in Alaska, and Ron had prayed to God that he protects Chris during his trip. But God let him down and Ron became an atheist(p.60).

Analyze: Ron was such a sweet human being and I find his back story so sad. The fact that he thought he had found a son in Chris and prayed to God to protect him was pretty heart-wrenching. The fact that he also became an atheist when he found out about Chris' passing was so sad, I felt like there was something heavy on my chest when I read that bit.
#Fatherfigure #Lordprotect #AloneAgain

Summary: Jon Krakhauer went to Carthage to interview Wayne, Wayne's girlfriend Gail Borah and Wayne's mom so they can share their thoughts on Chris McCandless. Chris explains to why he wanted to divorce(p.64) them as his parents. Carine and Westerberg later say that Chris was most likely celibate(p.65) because he never really talked about any girl friends. Though he did like the opposite sex, he never actually had a relationship with one. Americans seem to be obsessed(p.66) with sex, but Chris was not. Mrs. Westerberg hit it off very well and talked nonstop for five hours, she said " there was something fascinating about him."(p.67) Chris sends off his goodbye letters almost knowing the trip was going to be fatal(p.69) and he just said to take care and it was great knowing everyone he met on the journey.

Analyze: I find Chris very relatable when it comes to relationships with females because I prefer to see how I get along with somebody rather than wanting to have sex with them. I find it really sad though that he died celibate because he didn't get to experience love I guess. I also find it so weird that in his letters he was writing as if he knew he was going to die on his last push to Alaska. I can't even imagine the feeling of knowing that you're going to die.
#virgin4L #Farewell #Creepingdeath

Carine was an animated(.128) talker and like Chris was energetic and self-assured.

Summary: Almost a year after Chris's death, his parents and Jon Krakauer visit the place of his death. They took a helicopter to reach their destination, but it was a last-minute change of plans. At first, the plan was to follow the Stampede Trial like Chris did, and wanted the coal miner, Butch Killian, to drive them to the trial; but he called them saying that he worried(p.201) the river was too high, so they took a helicopter.

Analyze: I can't even imagine the pain that Walt and Billie had to through while they were on the bus knowing that that's where their son had died. I wonder what they were thinking when they were sitting on the bus. It's quite sad that in the end, Chris disliked his parents, but at least his parents cared enough to visit the place of his death.

Growing up my only dream was soccer and my only goals were to be the happiest I could possibly be. Now I don't really have dreams because they seem unrealistic. As of now I have a couple of goals, and they aren't to far a way I feel like. Or maybe my goals are further than I think, I don't really know, but I will do anything to achieve my goals because I've grown tired of where I've put myself. As a kid I was always around trouble makers or people I thought would be fun to be around, but now I feel like the people around me don't understand me or they just don't relate to me, so it creates this feeling of not fitting in. Then I tend to be alone, which I'm fine with, but life is always better with a couple friends around you. I think what I need to do is figure myself out emotionally and mentally; and I need to go out more and experience life.

I don't want to do the type of odyssey that Chris did, but I would like to travel to cool places because the places I've been to so far I've found really fascinating and it's a really crazy feeling when you see something for the first time. Now, I wouldn't say that I love traveling, but I find it interesting and I think traveling to new places or even going to places near by that I haven't been to can better my mental health. I've realized that maybe my mental health has worsened because I've been living the same life for the past 4 years, and I haven't experienced anything new in some time now. I think going out with friends and family can bring back the happiness I felt as a kid and make me a happier person in general. But I want to stay happy, and not just feel happiness one day and the rest be any regular day. Also, I really want a partner, as in like someone I can count on when I'm not feeling well, because for sometime people have come and gone in my life, and in the end I'm always left alone; when I'm alone it feels as if time moves slower and I just watch the world spin around me. I feel like having someone by my side will keep me from feeling sad and well alone. In all honesty, I feel like my goals are a lot closer than I perceive them to be. And as of now, I don't have a dream.

#Idontbelonghere #strugglewithin #watchingtheworldspin

Chris McCandless Reflection

I think highly of Chris McCandless because it takes a different type of person to leave the government-controlled world and seek what the world actually has in store. It would be a little different if I was actually close to him because I would question his decision to leave when he had his whole life ahead of him. I feel like if I was close to him I would possibly hate him for a certain amount of time, but then realize that he was just doing what he desired. There was only really one thing that was really annoying about Chris, and it was how hard-headed he was. It didn't matter what people told him, he was going to do it anyway, and that kind of annoyed me because if he would have listened he could have had a better outcome, but then again he wanted to do things his way, so I guess it was fair. Besides that, he is one of the realest human beings to ever live because he decided that he was going to live his life his way, and not the way society wanted him to live it, and that's a very admirable thing about him. He died a very painful and probably scary death, but I find it honorable because he died a type of death that you hear in stories, and that is almost unbelievable.

#inseekoftruth #survivalofdafittest #desire2live
