As a reader, I connected to this novel because they talked about a 9 year old girl Nya she is a couple years younger then me. Nya had to walk 12 hours every day to get water for her family. But until one day a man named Salva came to her village. He came and talked to her uncle. The day after Salva came they came back but they had a big drill. That day they started drilling for water. After months and months of drilling they finally found water on this day Nya and all the people of her village were so happy to have clean water.

I would recommend this novel to someone that likes to read a survival story because Salva had to go to so many refugee camps and go through war zones which was basically everywhere. Also I would recommend this book to someone who likes to read about historical events because this book takes place in Sudan and when the Sudanese Civil war is happening. In addition, someone else I would recommend this book to is someone that enjoys reading realistic fiction.

As a reader, I connected to this novel because they talked about a 10 year old boy who was a victim of child abuse and I know someone that was a victim of child abuse so it was really interesting to read Dave's story and what he had to go through and how he survived. Also Dave's father was not at home that much so Dave was fighting for his self and he didn't have anybody to stand up for him.

I would recommend this book to someone that likes to read about someones life. Also if they like to read survival stories they would like this book because Dave has to go through a lot and he has to fight back to stay alive because nobody would stand up for him his dad was never home and his brothers didn't care so he was all alone and his mother would beat him all the time and not feed him and lock him in the bathroom with a bucket of bleach and different kinds of cleaning products so he would breath then in and she was hopping that he would die because she didn't like him an she thought he was a bad boy when he really wasn't.
