I believe that the choice of whether or not your cells can be used for research is not entirely your decision. Unless you are put in physical and mental pain, however, they should not be used for commercial use and should stay for medical improvement only. HeLa cells have helped tremendously throughout the history of medicine from when they were first discovered. As most if not all modern-day medicine was made with the help of these cells most recently, they were used for the COVID vaccine. For something like this, this is kinda of the building block of medicine, I do believe people should be compensated including her family (At least free health care). But I wouldn't agree to give credit to everyone who donated a little bit of cells as you should do it for the betterment of society and not your personal wealth. I believe that there was some case of racial discrimination as while yes the text states that regulations weren't as strict I feel like if she was a white lady there would be stricter. And I feel at the time this happened that if it did happen to someone that was white there right of compensation would've been fought harder for.

-Abdrabo Alwahishi

I should decide how my cells are used because they are mine. The patient or their family should be the ones to profit off the cells because they are related. The goodness from the research of HeLa cells is the growth of the human cell line. The social issues caused the colored patients to be in a separate hospital which probably wasn't as good. Henriettas fam should be given compensation for the use of her cells because they are related. -Brielle

I think that the people whose cells are being used should be able to choose what happens with their own cells, since if they don't want a piece of their body to be gone, no one should be able to take it away. I think someone should be able to profit from a patient's cells as long as it's good for everyone, but if they exploit it by making it super expensive, that shouldn't be allowed as then not everyone would be able to access it. Lots of good vaccines that have prevented vicious diseases have come from the research of HeLa cells, like the prevention of Polio. I think social influences like poverty have influenced the case because these big time doctors gained lots of money, and were borderline unethical with how they went about collecting the cells, and some people that don't have as much money aren't able to afford the proper medicines, some that were made from these HeLa cells. I think that Henrietta's family should receive some compensation as many big companies made billions of dollars and can afford to give this family some money in exchange for the amazing cell that has saved many lives.

• Who should decide how your cells are used? Why? - You should be the only one to decide how your cells are used. You know yourself better than anybody, and whether or not the cells would be going towards “good or bad cause” doesn’t matter. it should be your right to choose what happens to YOUR body and therefore YOUR cells.

• Should someone be able to profit from a patient's cells? Why or why not? - Yes. I think that as long as the patient gets a fair percentage of the profit then the scientist who had the skills and patience to create whatever they did with the cells also deserves some of it.

• What good came out of the research on HeLa cells? Many vaccines and medicines were created, lots of research on different diseases was conducted because of HeLa cells.

• How might have social issues (e.g., poverty, education, religion) influenced the case? - During the time that Henrietta was alive, people of color were definitely not respected and treated the same as they are today. Even if they did have Henrietta’s personal consent at the time, I doubt much compensation would’ve been given. Along with the fact that she was uneducated and living in poverty, scientists had an easier time disregarding her rights and identity and were able to get away with lots more.

• Should Henrietta's family be given compensation for the use of her cells? Why or why not? - Definitely. Henrietta and her family deserved to know what she contributed to American healthcare. Henrietta most likely would have wanted her family to be included in the compensation as well.

In the context of medical research, informed consent from the patient or their legal representative should be the primary factor in deciding how a patient's cells are used. This is essential to respect an individual's autonomy and ethical considerations.

Profiting from a patient's cells can be ethically complex. While research and medical advancements are crucial, it's important to ensure that patients or their families receive fair compensation or benefits if their cells contribute significantly to commercial research or profit. Ethical guidelines and legal frameworks should be in place to strike a balance.

The research on HeLa cells has been immensely beneficial. HeLa cells have played a pivotal role in advancing medical science, contributing to the development of vaccines, genetics research, cancer and AIDS studies, and drug development. They have been invaluable in understanding and treating various diseases.

Social issues like poverty and limited access to education likely influenced Henrietta Lacks' situation. She, being a poor and uneducated black woman, may not have had the resources or knowledge to advocate for her rights, such as informed consent. Social disparities can affect how individuals are treated in the medical system.

There is a compelling argument for compensating Henrietta's family, considering the significant profits generated from HeLa cells. While it's challenging to retroactively address this, it highlights the importance of ethical considerations and informed consent in medical research. Ideally, fair compensation or support should be provided to the families of cell donors when their contributions lead to significant commercial gains.

-Joshua Aguilar.

You should be able to decide what your cells are used for unless you let a scientist or doctor decide. This is because there may be a specific disease/ illness that you or someone you know may have experienced, and you want to contribute to its extinction. If you donate cells to science, you should be paid based on how successful they have proven to be. For example, if the cells you contributed worsen a type of illness, compensation should be out of the question.

HeLa cells have provided useful insight into many diseases and their treatments, such as HPV, and how it leads to cervical cancer. Social issues may have had an impact on the case because many would consider it to be ethically immoral to use somebody's cells without consent. This can greatly reduce the amount of research conducted on the HeLa cells. Lastly, Henrietta's family should definitely be compensated. Not only were her cells used without knowledge, but they have also contributed a very generous amount to the treatment and prevention of various illnesses and diseases.

-Alex Hinson

I believe that one’s self should always be the one to decide any medical decisions about their own person, I believe this because nobody knows your best interest apart from yourself whether good or bad. I don’t think it is a bad thing that scientists are profiting from a patients cells, without the researchers composing their experiments there would be no profit made in the first place. The good thing that came out of this study would be all the people HeLa has saved and helped. Henrietta was a poor, black women from an uneducated family, as quoted in the passage, I do believe this had a factor in the result of her not getting any compensation for her cells or even be given the decency to know that the doctor had taken and sent cells from her body. If she was wealthy and she was a fit for the social que I do believe things would’ve turned out differently. I certainly believe that Lacks family should be getting compensation from the profit being made off of her cells, absolutely. Without her cells most discoveries and the advancements we see today in the medical field would’ve have been discovered or possible.- Brooke

Personally, I think the one whose cells they were. If they wanted my cells, I would want to be the one to say they can or can't use them. If in an event similar to this however, I'd say it's up to the family. I also think that the profit from those cells, or at least some of it, should go to the owner of the cells, as technically, it's a part of them that's just growing somewhere else, and so it's the same as if they wanted to use the person as a test dummy. And yes, while I do think that more things could have been done before the use of these HeLa cells, I will admit, they've done a lot for us as a species, from boosting our cellular research, to helping us fight new illnesses that we've discovered over the years, like Covid. Now, the whole consent thing and figuring what would happen with the cells, what the family gets out of it, all of that was figured out, although a lot later, and while in theory they could have said, those aren't your cells, and the other side saying the same back and forth forever, there's more to it than that. The family's financial situations could have affected their thoughts on if they should be paid for the what the cells have done, being related to them, or maybe they view the whole idea of science is something they refuse to believe due to religious thinking, all of those could have affected how the family, or even certain judges could have seen this, and how that case went. On the topic of how the family views if they should be rewarded or not, I personally think that they shouldn't. While yes, it is technically their family, it's not them, it's not any of their cells, and so they didn't actually do anything. Then again neither did the scientists, and that's where we're going to end it, because this is already longer than I wanted, and is way less coherent.

Colby Hayes

However it was likely that her being from a poor family caused doctors, who are of a higher social status, to not consider giving her the credit she deserved. Still, using her cells and not notifying her or her family about the actions is immoral, even for the sake of research.

Henrietta's family should very well be given compensation for the use of her cells. Henrietta herself should have been compensated immediately after the discoveries were made after the use of her cells. Even more so her family because they are Henrietta's kin and suffered the most from the loss. Using Henrietta's cells for research, and eventually profit, without even notifying her family is unjust and unfair.

Consider the following. You gave blood at a donation center. Without your consent, that blood was tested and part of it contained the necessary genetic makeup to cure a disease. However, in the midst of this cure being created and sent out, you both never knew of the use of your blood and were never compensated for the use of your blood without your permission. How would you feel?

                                              -Caleb Taft

I believe we should be able to decide how our cells get used, seeing as it's still our body. We should have the choice to decide whether to donate or not, regardless of the circumstances. I do not believe that a doctor/researcher should be able to profit from a patient's cells after having a scientific breakthrough. It is their cells that have contributed so they should have some kind of monetary gain. The good that came out was a stable human cell line, that was grown itself. As well as helping test vaccines, learn more about genetics, research cancers, and AIDS, and develop drugs. The social issues of her situation definitely affected how the doctors/researchers went about things, as well as how important it was that they should've gotten a payment of sorts. Yes, they should be given compensation, because Henrietta is dead, which leaves the family members the only way to make the wrongs right. After all, it was their family member that helped these corporations make millions. - Janeily :0

I believe that you should be able to decide if your cells are used for something. I also believe that someone should be able to profit off of your cells as long as you are being compensating. The good that came from the research on HeLa Cells was the testing on vaccines, research into cancer, and helping developing drugs. Social Issues such as race and education might have influenced this case because if Henrietta did not give consent, I believe that the doctors may still have used her cells because of her education or even because she was in a segregated hospital. I do believe that Henrietta’s family should be compensated because HeLa cells have been used in the development of so many drugs and because they were unaware of the use of her cells.

The family of the individual or the individual himself should be the one to consent if they want their cells being used. I feel this way b/c a lot of families can feel that their loved one is being violated by being used for sciences and not everyone believes in science.

I believe the family should benefit from donating their family cells.
