After Jonas is assigned as the Receiver of Memory, he gets rules that are very different from everyone else’s. He can’t tell anyone about his training, can’t take medicine for pain from it, and can’t share his dreams. He’s allowed to ask any questions and even to lie. That last rule really confuses him, because he thought lying was never allowed. From that moment, he starts to doubt the Community and realizes that people live without knowing the truth or feeling real emotions.

In real life, The Giver has been banned in some schools because it talks about heavy stuff like death and total control of society. It also questions rules and the way people live, which makes some parents and teachers worried that kids might start thinking differently or questioning everything. So sometimes they take the book away to avoid trouble.
