My CPA experience- what did I learn about myself? by Janine Parnell

Now that CPA is over, what have you learned about yourself as a musician as a result of your preparation for this event? How did your skill level grow during your CPA preparation? What do you wish you had done to prepare for CPA? How will all of this affect how you approach music preparation for future SVHS Orchestra events?

One thing I have learned about myself is that I do not pay attention to where I play in the bow as much as I should. I also learned that drilling is one of the strategies that work best for me, and I rely on the muscle memory that develops from that practice strategy. I feel like my skill level has grown since we started preparing for CPA in the sense that I am counting consistently throughout the piece which had been one of my goals for orchestra, and I am able to move my fingers fast enough to play faster rhythms. I did a lot of drilling in order to prepare for the event, but I wish I practiced the transitions more so that I could play smoother.

When I was the only person in my section in class, I found myself panicking. While I was preparing for CPA, I think my counting got better. Before CPA, I would rely on just feeling the counts instead of counting them. Now, I know the importance of counting and now just guessing. Something I wish I did more of when I was practicing is playing with a metronome. It would have saved a lot of time when I was struggling with the tempo and keeping it consistent. CPA will affect how I approach music for other SVHS Orchestra events because I will not be as intimidated when I see music I'm unfamiliar with.

My skills in subdivision/counting, coming up with fingerings, and playing different rhythms grew during CPA preparation. CPA affects my approach to music by showing me an easier way to take apart larger pieces, harder pieces of music. -SM

I am beginning to realize that my abilities and struggles as an orchestra student in some ways mirror that which I experience as a soccer player. In both cases, I find myself struggling with speed, efficiency, and finesse (among other things). I think that my preparation for CPA was more effective than my preparation for similar events in the past, and I attribute this to a focus on specific sections, rather than simply playing through pieces. In my personal time, I should have made a better effort in figuring out basic rhythms and notes, which would have better enabled me to focus on the details that are required to produce an impressive performance. This is definitely something that I wish that I did differently in my preparation for CPA. This fault in my preparation has led me to feel that my personal performance at CPA was not necessarily on-par with my performance potential. I do believe that for every piece I play with an ensemble, I gain new insights as to proper rhythm, tones, as well as the skill of hearing across sections. In approaching future SVHS events, I will certainly try to keep all of these things in mind and continue to keep orchestra a priority in my time-management.

I learned that focusing on playing the music rather than thinking about how the judges will score you can eliminate stress and anxiety before a concert. There have been some concerts where I am too focused on the audience that I get nervous during the concert. During CPA, I decided to really just focus on the music and not how I was scored. This seemed to help. My skill level grew during CPA preparation because I am more aware of lining up certain parts with other sections in the music and am a better counter. I wish that I had tackled the most challenging sections of the music first instead of repeating the easier ones. This could have resulted in better preparation for CPA. This will affect how much I approach music preparation for future SVHS events because CPA made me understand the importance of really listening to other sections and working on hard sections first as soon as I receive the music.

Now that CPA is over, I have learned that with hard work and dedication, I can accomplish so much as a musician. I remember I could not play a few sections in both of the pieces that we discussed at a fast tempo. I practiced using chunking strategies both in class and at home, and I was able to play these running sixteenth-note measures at tempo at CPA. I have also grown more appreciative of sectionals, because I can talk to members of my section about specific sections in the pieces, and we can work together to fix various issues. My skill level grew during CPA because I was able to increase my focus when counting rhythms. For example, when we first got Green Rhythmico, sometimes I would find it hard to play the pizzicato part while the soloist is playing their solo, and I would find it hard to concentrate. However, I have learned to increase my focus and concentrate only on my part. I wish I practiced with a metronome more. All of this will affect how I approach music preparation for future SVHS Orchestra events because I will make sure to write any fingerings and counts in my part and handle the "problem areas" first.

I pay a lot more attention to small details, and am able to pick things up quicker now. I wish I would have realized what all I could have done to better myself, more early on in my preparation. I needed to realize that if I prepare myself properly, there is no reason for me to be overtaken by my nerves, and to put my trust into the preparation and my teacher. This new found realization, will cause for less confusion, and slow paced work in the future. I can now understand what needs to be done when I am having trouble mentally with music, and/or just in general when physically working on my pieces.

I learned that with proper motivation I am able to learn pieces in a small amount of time. In order to learn pieces over time, I have grown in understanding rhythm patterns and reading the key. In the future I will follow instructions from the teacher, not doing so during seating auditions lead to me practicing the wrong part. Following instructions will not only [prevent situations like this, but help me develop better practice strategies.

As a result of my preparation for CPA, I learned that I do not get very anxious about things in advance. Instead, I start to get anxious when the event I am getting anxious for gets very close, such as when we were on the bus headed to CPA. I started to feel very nervous and had to come myself down. I also learned that I sometimes procrastinate and wait until the performance is very close to start practicing thoroughly. This made it so that I had to put a lot of work into the piece in the last couple weeks before the concert when, instead, I could have been practicing little by little for the entire time that we had the music. While preparing for CPA, I improved a lot in regards to counting. I used to just count in quarter notes and guess to play eighth or sixteenth notes. Now, however, I am able to count in eighth or sixteenth notes as necessary in order to properly play rhythms. Something that I wish I did more of when practicing is practicing dynamics. This is because I feel that dynamics were something that I struggled with, both when we played our pieces and when we played the cite reading piece. In addition, I wish I practiced more with the metronome because once I started practicing with the metronome, everything became easier, and I became more confident in what I was playing. CPA will affect how I approach music for future SVHS Orchestra events as I will be able to remain more calm, having performed for Spring Valley before, and I will be more proactive when it comes to practicing, because I have learned that it is better to work in small chunks than it is to do a lot at once.

Now that CPA is over, I learned that as a musician as a result of my preparation for this event that thinking that I am being judged made me more nervous and anxious, and despite preparing much for this CPA, I still tend to mess up when I am nervous. I also learned as a musician that marking up my music and having the small details that are written in my music helps when playing it because I thought that I had forgotten how to play a section in the music during CPA, but the markings made me remember what I had practiced for before. My skill level grew during my CPA preparation because I learned how to play various rhythms and beats in music back to back and at a relatively fast tempo, especially in Momentum. I think that my skill in reading these rhythms and being able to play them grew. I wish I had been able to practice with the metronome more so that I could be able to count the beats better in the music and not speed up or slow down. This all will affect how I approach music preparation for future SVHS as I will know to practice more with the metronome and mark every part of my music that is necessary, despite seeming unnecessary. This will make me committed to prepare for the music in future orchestra events as I have learned that hard work pays off, and I can work hard by doing these things mentioned previously so that I can be more confident.

As a result of my preparation, I have learned two critical things about my ability as a musician. The first is that I can not cut corners or skip oppurtunities for practice just because I had to do something else because any time for practicing is valuable and can not be wasted, even with the idea of "I'll do this later" implanted. The second thing I learned is that I currently lack sufficient ability to coordinate myself with the rest of the orchestra I am playing with because I failed to account for such factors in the times that I did practice. So I should always keep in mind that even if something does not look necessary, I should always pursue that practice goal because it will inevitably become useful. One thing that I have become more skilled at for the CPA preparation was my ability to predict the entry time when other sectiosn other than my own is playing solo. However in other cases, when my section is playing or the rests were short, my ability to count completely breaks down, so I have to push my abilities in that regard. I wished that during my preparation for the CPA that I had pushed myself harder on the practice sessions, as well as treat the CPA seriously enough as to fully try to work out the kinks instead of just focusing on playing the general piece better. I will keep all this in mind for future orchestra events, and I will especially remember to practice all aspects of playing that could possibly be related or relavent to the performance

From the result of my preparation for CPA, I have learned that I, as a musician, often play better with a group rather than individually; I find that when in a group, I can hear more clearly hear what I am playing than when I play alone as I have others to compare myself to and receive feedback from. In addition, when playing with a group, I found myself adjusting any incorrect parts more quickly as I had more people to compare with in order to judge my playing and see if I am making a mistake. During this preparation, my skill level grew as I learned how to take on more difficult parts of the music by employing strategies such as chunking different sections and repetition in order to best ensure correct expression and intonation, which is even more important when playing as a group. However, I wish that I had used the metronome more for my preparation for CPA as I found myself, during the performance, to be a little faster or slower at certain sections in contrast to the rest of the orchestra. All of this will affect how I approach music preparation for future events as this will make me more aware of the importance of using a metronome and keeping a steady tempo, especially when playing in a group; also, this will make me more conscious of the importance of looking at the conductor during a performance, especially at times where I may be unsure of the tempo, as the conductor is quite literally giving the tempo for the piece.

Now that CPA is over, I learned that getting stressed over playing is a major hindrance I have, since worrying too much about what I am playing causes me to not focus on the conductor and get off beat/mess up notes. My skill level grew during my CPA preparation since I improved at making sure to focus on the conductor instead of relying on memory or what other sections are playing in order to stay on beat. I wish I had practiced shifting without having to look at my hand more before CPA, since once I got on stage I could not really see my pencil marks on my cello and messed up the high notes. For future SVHS orchestra events, I will work more on gaining muscle memory so it is easier for me to play, especially in a new environment. I also will focus more on getting rhythms down/staying on beat first instead of focusing too much on individual sections of the piece, since focusing too much on individual sections can causes me to forget about the conductor.

As a member of the ensemble that performed yesterday at the CPA, I have learned that my biggest flaws are that I often am not constant with my playing. For example, my left-hand may shift in terrible situations, leading to my notes to be out of tune. In addition, my bow control is also not up to par as I would like it to be, resulting in my playing to be rather stringent and dull at times. The situation with my left-hand also has led to detrimental effects to the overall orchestra. This is due to the fact that, though it may not sound as prominent in the overall sound quality of the track, the notes stood out like a sore thumb. As a response to this, the audience may find criticism of these features instead of focusing on the piece as a whole. On the topic of my overall growth, however, I believe that though my tone on the violin is still relatively bad, it has gotten better. This is due to how, grouped with the lack of violin two players that I could base myself off of through regular class periods and general violin 2 players, I had often played too quietly beforehand, leading to the 2nd violin parts in the individual class periods to be quite dim. This has forced me to play louder as well as to keep rhythm. Due to this, I had also progressed in the field of rhythm in the terms of "improvements." Rather than being clueless of the rhythm like beforehand, now, I find a sort of reason to the different rests and beat types of notes. This has led me to play sheet music without having trouble with the "sound" of the piece. However, as a way to prevent this, I view that I could've practiced the scales of the pieces more. Through these preparations that I could have done prior to the CPA, I believe that I could have made my notes seem more out of tune as well as sightread better on the sightread section of the CPA. In the future, I believe that, in preparation for more CPAs, practicing more scales would be ideal. I believe through incorporating these extra steps, I can better both my tone, rhythm, sight reading skills, and tune quality.

Sometimes I would catch myself playing quieter and less into the music than how I would in rehearsal. I think my skill level grew in counting. In the future, I will practice more focused with more practice strategies to fix and clean up intonation in sections.
