Clamouring out to his wife, Stella DuBois, whilst proceeding to throw the piece of meat he has just bought from the butchers, despite her cries and protest for him not to. This demonstrates Stanley's male tendencies and the dominance he owns towards those around him which will become more and more prevalent as the play goes on.

They are about twenty-eight or thirty years old, roughly dressed in blue denim work clothes. STANLEY carries his bowling jacket and re -stained package from a butcher's."

The introductory stage direction for Stanley Kowalski. "...roughly dressed in blue denim work clothes" suggests that both Stanley and Mitch are both the workers for their families and the ones who make the money. Also correlates with the typical gender conventions of this era, where the women are expected to stay at home, whilst the men are ought to work and be served by their wives.

One of the themes/ideas that is developed through Stanley is power. Throughout most of the play, he makes sure to show others his power and control over everything.

An example of this could be Stanley hitting his wife, after he gets mad and loses his temper, in scene three (page 35). He asserts dominance and power aggressively through violence here. Stella is used to him doing this and so, she stays with him.

One more example is when Stanley hurls the cups and the saucer to the ground after Stella asks him to clean up after himself. In scene eight (page 77), he says that “Every man is a king”. Again, he is asserting his power and control over Stella in the relationship.

Another theme/idea that is developed through Stanley is his sexuality.

In scene eight, Stanley says "Them night we had together? God, honey, it’s gonna be sweet when we can make noise in the night the way that we used to and get the colored lights going with nobody’s sister behind the curtain to hear us!". He emphasises on the fact that Stella's sister has interrupted their life by coming to their place. It also shows that he misses the fun they had before she came. This highlight Stanley’s sexuality that he shares with his wife. It also shows that he really wants Blanche to leave, so they can have all that fun back.

Stanley Kowalski lives in a basic, fundamental world which allows for no subtleties and no refinements. He is the man who likes to lay his cards on the table. He can understand no relationship between man and woman except a sexual one, where he sees the man's role as giving and taking pleasure from this relationship.

He is 🤬 and brutal. He is like the Stone Age savage bringing home the meat from the kill. He is animal-like and his actions are such. He eats like an animal and grunts his approval or disapproval. When aroused to anger, he strikes back by throwing things, like the radio. Or he breaks dishes or strikes his wife. He is the man of physical action.

He does this after proceeding to take off his shirt in front of a woman he has just met, which strongly suggests the confidence Stanley owns within himself and the masculinity he is not afraid to exhibit.

The scene indicates that he pays the bills while Stella depends on him as he buys the meat and throws it at her. It shows that the men were the breadwinners, providing income for the family.

Stanley acts in a way that portrays him as entitled and an empowered man(in the sense that he gives himself power). This is shown consistently through the drama. For example, scene one, page 14 where Stanley says "My clothes are stickin' to me. Do you mind if I make myself comfortable?". Stanley immedietly takes his shirt off, establishing his entitlement, he is allowed to do whatever he likes.

Scene 3, page 29: [STANLEY gives a loud whack of his hand on her thigh]. This stage direction is another consistent act of Stanley's self entitled and empowered behaviour.

Scene 3, page 35: [STANLEY charges after STELLA]. This stage direction shows the violent side of Stanley, he thinks he had power over others. He even asserts dominance in his friend group while playing poker.

If Stanley were to be described as 'lanky' or 'weak', the audience would imagine someone of the opposite (someone with a weak stance, no power, no confidence and lacks authority).

One thing associated to Stanley is the Napoleonic code. This code regards that the wife's property belongs to her husband as she is now basically his property. Stanley's interest in the Napoleonic code is shown in scene two, page 18 where he says "In the state of Louisiana we have the Napoleonic code according to which what belongs to the wife belongs to the husband.....". Stanley is explaining the code to Blanche as he is a husband himself and we can interpret that he takes an interest in the code.

They make solid statements of what he says.

For example, the quote "That’s how I’ll clear the table!" And I don’t like to be swindled."

Dominance and superiority. At the beginning of the play we are already notified of Stanley's stance as a dominant-hungry and authoritative man. Through this statement regarding the land and wealth of Belle Reve being left with Blanche and him wanting the information, he asserts his message that he is not a man who is deceived nor tricked, and therefore is someone who shouldn't be played with.

Huh?"

Whilst Stella is in the hospital on the way to delivering her baby with Stanley, he has just opened a bottle of beer and a “geyser of foam” shoots up. This can be a sexual image foreshadowing the action to follow and an amplification of Stanley's earlier tendencies. Stanley has also just become a father, so he wants to celebrate. But through this we are being shown a Stanley who seems as if he is about to lose control and on the verge of doing something he shouldn't even think about.

Stanley is present at the end of the play with no difference to the way he was in the beginning. Still rude, still dominant, still authoritative, and someone who you could consider the most insensitive and apathetic person you could know. Despite his wrongdoings he continues on with his life and continues he ventures as the 'bad man'.

Stella, Stella!"

Despite his masculinity he upholds for 98% of the play, we can also comprehend that under the thick skin of Stanley Kowalski, he is a child on the inside. OR, a being who may have never had it easy, or is definitely compensating for something he might've never had access to growing up, which translates into the anger and aggressiveness we see him possess throughout the whole play. In this iconic scene it is obvious that Stanley too is dependent and has a soft side that can be triggered by deprivation of someone he loves.

Can be seen multiple times in the play as a symbol of Stanley's masculinity and embodiment as a man especially during this era. He is most commonly depicted in a shirt that is sweaty or dirty, suggesting he is the worker and provider, he is the man of the house. We also see his innate desire to be shirtless as much as possible, suggesting masculinity once more, and his authority over others.

During the 1940s, males in the house were considered to be the head and the person who had the power and charge of the house.
p.29 "Stanley gives a loud whack of his hand on her thigh."
-This asserts Stanley's dominance over Stella, she is submissive whereas he is dominant. He is not respectful towards Stella and views her like his property.
P.18: "It looks to me like you have been swindled, baby, and when you’re swindled under the Napoleonic code I’m swindled too"
- Reminds Stella over his power over her due to the napoleonic code, where her property should belong to him.

Primitive:
Pg97 "He springs towards her"
- Blanche's actions mirror that of prey, weak and in hiding in comparison to Stanleys. He establishes his opinion as a fact and that he really is the king around the house.

pg 69: "And you run out an' get her cokes, I suppose? And serve ' em to her majesty in the tub?..."
- Stanley uses a lot of aggression in his language, if not aggression then he uses passive aggressiveness. He uses the rhetorical questions to show his passive aggressiveness.
pg 70: "Some canary-bird, huh!"
- Stanley displays his aggression here as well to imply he is annoyed of Blanche's singing from the bathroom. He uses onomatopoeia to show annoyance and irritation.

- The story starts off displaying Stanley as a loving husband who Stella adores. On page 10, where Stella states "I can hardly stand it when he is away for a Night...". She tails about Stanley in such a manner indicating he must treat her great since she adores him this much. Then, in scene three where Stanley strikes her, we can see he is abusive and this occurrence has happened before as it seemed to be normal around the time and no one was surprised by it(except Blanche). Thus, after Stanley manipulates everyone to go against Blanche, including Mitch who loved her, we can see him manipulative character that was more common in a dominant man who had the upper hand. After sexually abusing Blanche, he goes ahead and sends her off to a mental asylum which clearly tells the audience that Stanley is an animal-like, primitive, self entitled man who held the power to get whatever he wanted. Still, he seemed charming to everyone and was forgiven no matter what.
