Used as an endearing term, "my cielo" was inspired by Ellen Bass' Bone of My Bone and Flesh of My Flesh poem as she imagines new ways to refer to the people we love. We have such limited language in this area and I am inspired to think of new ways to describe that which is most important to me (both people and things).

"how the world descends into a rich mash, in order that it may resume."
Lines Written in the Days of Growing Darkness
by Mary Oliver

Mary Oliver is one of my favourite poets and I use her work as both inspiration and personal solace. This line of her poem sums up many recent experiences that I've had working in the hospital, watching the show One Strange Rock, and while reading a few books that have stuck with me. Existentially, this quote captures a lot of my thoughts.

This quote, a Norwegic sentiment, resists the idea that pouring rain, snow, and other elements should keep me indoors. It encourages accessibility in my experiencing of the world around me.

I remember the boom of the thunder, to the left and then right of me, travelling across the sky. The rain filled the gutter in the sloping driveway and ran toward our house. Dad sat quietly in a chair in the garage, car door wide open to watch it all happen. He motioned for me to join him.

I remember sitting in the snow, feet dangling on the icy, homemade rink in my backyard, our backs pressed up against the glass entryway door. The ragged (but good) feeling in my lungs from playing outside for hours. Our mitts were off, and ever so slowly our fingers crept closer together. I held your hand, a romantic hand, for the very first time. It was bliss.

I remember my mother’s voice as I opened the bathroom door, “you are so busted”. Her eyes dead set on mine; my eyes averting hers. I handed her the cordless phone and ditched my plans for sneaking out that night.

I remember the muddy footprints on the floor leading from the chimney to the Christmas tree. I stepped into the living room and upon seeing the evidence, was terrified that someone (even Santa) could sneak into our house while we were sleeping.

I remember sitting in the passenger seat, window rolled down, looking out at the Nevada desert, the expanse of the orange and red dirt forming canyons and caves. “She Burns” by Foy Vance blared through the rented car speakers. I felt the cold from the desert and absolute gratitude.
