The first advertisement is targeted towards athletes who will buy these shoes from Nike. The second advertisement targets kid and teaches them about good food choices. The first advertisement uses imagery to influence our decision of what shoe to buy and it also shows famous athletes who are very well known, and we will buy the product as these famous people are promoting the product which is influence our decision. The second one uses cartoons which will be retable to the target audience who are kids. The use of slogan and imagery is done in the first advertisement. The second advertisement uses vibrant colours which help make the advertisement attractive. The use of imagery and text influences decisions of athletes who are the target audience as it might attract them to buy the product. The second as is not traditional as it uses cartoons not humans which makes it different but more appealing as well.

Watch and Analyse:

1. Nike - "You Can't Stop Us" -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gx6DSXijITU

Discussion:

What is the purpose?

The ad’s purpose is to show how sport unites people across the world, even in times of crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic, racial injustice, and global division. It’s a message of resilience. Nike is using this ad to say that no matter our differences or struggles, we can overcome anything together.

Who is the audience?

Nike is targeting:

Athletes and sports fans of all levels, from professionals to everyday players.

Young people who care about equality, inclusion, and social change.

Global viewers, regardless of race, gender, or nationality.

Anyone affected by recent global issues, including the pandemic and protests.

This is clearly aimed at a socially conscious and emotionally aware generation that values action and connection.

Was it effective?

Yes, extremely effective. The editing is powerful, the use of split-screen moments showing athletes doing the same movements across different sports and cultures visually reinforces the message of unity. The message sticks, and the brand feels more meaningful because of it.

Where is the line between persuasion and pressure?

This ad stays on the persuasion side. It encourages viewers to be strong and united without making them feel guilty or scared. It uplifts instead of pressuring. The tone is inspiring, not forceful. The persuasion comes from emotional connection, not obligation.

How do ads play on emotions or fears?

Ads often use emotion to create a bond with the viewer. In this Nike ad, emotions like hope, determination, pride, and solidarity are used to create impact. It shows struggle, injury, protest, and recovery.

Sometimes, ads also use fear to get attention, like health ads showing consequences of bad habits. But in this case, Nike uses more empathy and inspiration than fear.

Should health ads use fear to motivate?

Fear can work, but only when it’s balanced. For example, showing the dangers of smoking or unsafe driving can be effective if it’s followed by a clear message about what the viewer can do to stay safe. If an ad uses too much fear without offering hope or solutions, it can overwhelm or shut down the viewer emotionally.

So yes, health ads can use fear, but they should also include a path forward. Fear alone is not enough. People need to feel that their actions will make a difference.

The Nike "You Can't Stop Us" commercial aims to encourage strength, and perseverance, particularly global issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic and social inequality. The advertisement features various sports athletes, cultures, and backgrounds, visually bridging them in a split-screen effect to show how movement and forward progress are common.

The Change4Life "Be Food Smart" ad is, on the other hand, for public health education. Its role is to educate parents and families regarding the concealed sugars, fats, and salt within everyday foods and to promote healthier alternatives through the free-to-use Food Scanner app. This ad is specifically directed at parents of young children, more specifically those who do the grocery shopping and meal preparation.

Although both commercials are successful, Nike's is emotionally persuasive and international in appeal, while Change4Life's is more functional, segmented, and attuned to quantifiable behavior change.

Both the Nike and Food Smart ads encourage change and growth, though in different ways. Nike focuses on unity, resilience, and collective strength, using sports as a powerful symbol for overcoming challenges. It’s emotional and motivational, aimed at inspiring people to rise together. On the other hand, the Food Smart ad takes a more practical, informative approach, urging viewers to make healthier food choices by exposing hidden sugars and fats. While Nike speaks to global and social issues, Food Smart stays personal and health-focused. Despite the contrast in tone and topic, both deliver empowering messages about taking action and improving lives.

Pressure is when an ad makes you feel forced or guilty. Nike’s “You Can’t Stop Us” ad persuades because it inspires people to keep going, not by making them feel bad.

2. How do ads play on emotions or fears?

Ads use feelings to catch your attention. The Nike ad uses strong emotions like hope and strength. It shows challenges but also shows people overcoming them, which makes you feel motivated.

3. The ad utilises real life athletes and encouraging statements to persuade the audience to buy their product. On the other hand, the second advertisement, a food related company was aiming to advertise their product on the basis of eating healthy, however the product itself was unclear weather it was a food item, awareness campaign or a healthy eating guide. The visual quality of both ads also varied with clean transitions and 4K graphics in the Nike advertisement was better in quality compared to the low graphic and rough transitions in the food ad. The target audience also varied in both ADs, in the Nike AD the target audience seemed to be adults, specifically sports fans and atheletes, it was also using real life sports people from different backgrounds. In contrast the target audience for the second AD were children inferred form the fun animation style and large color pallet.

Nike – You Can’t Stop Us
The Nike ad You Can’t Stop Us is a powerful and emotional video that focuses on unity, resilience, and the power of sport. It uses a split-screen technique showing different athletes from various sports and backgrounds, moving together in perfect sync. The ad highlights social issues like racism, gender equality, and disability, while celebrating teamwork and human strength. Its fast pace, dramatic music, and inspiring narration create a strong emotional impact. Nike aims to connect with people’s emotions and motivate them to keep pushing forward, both in sports and life.

Change4Life – Be Food Smart
The Be Food Smart ad by Change4Life is a health campaign targeted mainly at parents and children in the UK. It encourages families to make better food choices by being aware of the sugar, salt, and fat in everyday foods. The ad uses bright colours, fun animations, and a friendly tone to make its message clear and easy to understand. It also promotes a free app that helps families scan products and find healthier options. The ad focuses on educating the public about diet and health in a simple and practical way.

Comparison
While both ads aim to influence behaviour, they do so in very different ways. Nike’s You Can’t Stop Us uses emotional storytelling, strong visuals, and powerful themes to inspire and unite people through sport. In contrast, Change4Life’s Be Food Smart uses clear, simple messaging and playful visuals to educate families about health and nutrition. Nike focuses on identity, strength, and motivation, while Change4Life is more about practical change in daily habits. One moves people emotionally, the other informs them logically, but both are effective in their own ways.

Both Nike advertisements deliver powerful messages, but in different ways. The first ad focuses on breaking through doubt and negativity, using fast-paced visuals and strong narration to show athletes proving others wrong. It builds energy and motivation by showing conflict and rebellion—turning every "you can't" into "watch me." In contrast, the second ad featuring Caitlin Clark takes a softer, more personal approach. It highlights how greatness can come from humble beginnings, like shooting in a barn, showing that where you start doesn't limit where you can go. While both ads aim to inspire and persuade the audience, the first uses defiance and intensity, while the second uses pride and identity. Together, they show two sides of Nike’s message: pushing against limits and owning your roots.
