I think that these charecters represent the story of Jesus. Frodo as Jesus, the one ring as his cross, and Gandalf as God. Frodo inherits the ring and must go out on a mission to save with the ring as a "burden" the ring causes him many struggles. The ring represents the cross because it shows how Jesus carried our sins through the cross by dying on the cross, as Frodo carries the ring. But the eucharist is different, it is the flesh of Jesus Christ, reminding us that he died for us.
